In winter greenhouses, where tomatoes are typically planted at the end of October, watering is generally avoided until the first fruit sets. After that, watering is done carefully, often under the mulch to maintain moisture without lowering the temperature. If necessary, a small amount of water can be applied under the plastic film to avoid unnecessary cooling. As the weather warms up, especially in early spring, timely watering becomes essential to support fruit development. Greenhouse-grown tomatoes require adequate moisture to ensure healthy growth and optimal yield. Third, observing the plant’s appearance is crucial for determining watering needs. A well-watered plant will have dark green, shiny, flat leaves and a compact growth habit. If the heart leaves appear shriveled, or if the leaves look dark green and droop slightly on sunny days, it may indicate a lack of water, and irrigation should be provided promptly. On the other hand, if the leaves are overly large, thin, or show signs of excessive water loss, it could mean overwatering, which should be corrected. Fourth, timing is important when watering in a greenhouse. Watering should be done on sunny days, and proper ventilation and drainage should follow. Avoid watering in the afternoon, evening, or on rainy days, as this can increase humidity and promote diseases like downy mildew. Also, do not water at noon, as high temperatures can damage root function. In hot weather, greenhouses can be ventilated late into the evening to help regulate temperature and moisture levels. Finally, watering before harvesting improves the commercial value of the tomatoes.
