Scientific selection of meat breeders

When selecting high-quality breeding meat pigeons, it's essential to choose superior breeds such as the American King Pigeon, Chinese Stone Dove Pigeon, Belgian Homing Pigeon, and Hong Kong Hybrid King Pigeon. These breeds are known for their strong disease resistance and rapid growth rates, making them ideal choices for meat production. In terms of market demand, both local and international markets—especially in Hong Kong, Macau, and large hotels—often require pigeons that weigh over 600 grams by the age of four weeks. Therefore, when purchasing breeding pigeons, it's important to consider their weight. Males should weigh at least 650 grams, while females should be no less than 550 grams. This ensures that the flock meets the required standards for commercial sale. The physical appearance of the pigeon is also crucial. Ideal breeding pigeons should have a well-proportioned body, with a round waist, broad back, short legs, and a calm, easy-to-handle temperament. A compact and sturdy build not only looks better but also contributes to better meat quality. Feather color plays a significant role in consumer preference. White-feathered pigeons are considered the highest quality, with white or light yellow skin being particularly popular among buyers. Gray, red, and yellow varieties follow in popularity, while dark or mottled feathers often result in bluish-purple skin, which is less desirable. For consistency and market appeal, it's best to select and breed pigeons of the same color. When pairing breeding pigeons, it's recommended to form fixed pairs. It’s common to purchase more males than females, so it’s wise not to buy too many at once. If you plan to raise 100 breeding pairs, start with 60 to 80 pairs, and after they reach six months of age, add more based on their performance. When buying breeding pigeons, it's important to evaluate their parentage, weight, body structure, feather color, and breeding history. Breeds with good quality and high productivity tend to produce offspring with similar traits. Therefore, during self-breeding, it's beneficial to keep and continue raising the offspring of top-performing birds to gradually improve the overall quality of your meat pigeon flock.
