New seeds are drying more

Before seeds are stored in the warehouse, sun-drying them for 3 to 5 days offers several important benefits. First and foremost, it helps reduce the moisture content. Freshly harvested seeds usually have a high water content, and drying them in the sun lowers this moisture level. This process not only promotes seed dormancy but also reduces respiration rates, which ultimately extends the shelf life of the seeds. Another key advantage is that sun-drying can significantly improve the germination rate. By drying the seeds, their embryos become more active, maintaining their ability to germinate properly. Studies have shown that sun-dried maize seeds can have a germination rate that is 10% to 20% higher compared to those that are not dried adequately. In addition, sun-drying helps eliminate harmful bacteria and pathogens. The ultraviolet rays from the sun kill many microorganisms that may be present on the surface of the seeds. This reduces the risk of insect infestation, mold growth, and overall seed deterioration during storage. Lastly, sun-drying supports the after-ripening process. Seed maturity occurs in two stages: morphological maturity, where the seed develops its physical form, and physiological maturity, where the seed becomes fully viable. Most seeds are harvested at the morphological stage, which means they still need time to reach full physiological maturity. Sun-drying accelerates this process, resulting in stronger seedlings and better uniformity when planted.
