Black porpoise breeding

The black porpoise, native to the mountainous regions of Yunnan, is a small herbivorous mammal weighing between 1.0 and 1.5 kg. It holds both medicinal and culinary value, with its meat being tender, flavorful, and easily digestible. After 3 to 4 months of proper feeding, individuals can reach a weight of around 0.75 kg. Locals regard it as a "physical treasure" due to its nutritional benefits, while its fur is also processed for various uses. Below are key farming techniques that ensure successful breeding and care.
(1) **Habitat and Behavior**
Black porpoises are generally calm and social, preferring group living. They are shy, easily startled by sudden noises or disturbances, and highly sensitive to sound. Their entire body is covered in black fur, with dark eyes, mouth, and feet. They lack a tail, have short limbs, and are not strong jumpers. These animals rarely bite or attack humans, making them relatively safe to handle. As long as rodents are controlled, they can be raised in open cages or ponds without issues.
In quiet environments, unexpected sounds from humans or other animals can cause panic among the group. Therefore, maintaining a peaceful setting is crucial. When hungry, their soft calls resemble squeaks. During mating season, males often emit low sounds and chase females, creating a lively atmosphere. In response to unusual noises, the entire group becomes alert, showing a collective "resonance" to signal vigilance.
(2) **Feeding Facilities**
Black porpoises can be raised using various methods depending on available space. Common approaches include cage rearing, flat-type pond systems, and three-dimensional factory-style culture.
- **Cage Rearing**: Suitable for small-scale breeding, this method allows better control over feeding and hygiene. Cages can be constructed from wood, bamboo, or wire mesh, with dimensions of approximately 60 cm x 50 cm x 40 cm.
- **Flat-Type Pond Rearing**: Ideal for homes or small spaces, this involves partitioning rooms into small pools (0.5–1.0 m²) filled with wood chips or hay for warmth and moisture absorption.
- **Three-Dimensional Factory Culture**: This system is more efficient for larger groups, featuring multi-tiered enclosures made of bricks, wood, and iron. The base is slightly sloped for easy cleaning. Each square meter can accommodate about 8–10 animals.
(3) **Dietary Requirements**
As herbivores, black porpoises require a balanced diet rich in fiber. A lack of fresh vegetation can lead to health issues, so green materials must be included regularly.
- **Concentrate Feed**: Includes corn meal, wheat bran, rice bran, or piglet pellets.
- **Green Feed**: Fresh grasses like oak grass, corn leaves, sugarcane leaves, vegetables, carrots, and sweet potatoes should be provided daily.
(4) **Daily Management**
Proper feeding and hygiene are essential. Moldy feed should be avoided, and compound feeds are recommended. Adults should be fed twice daily, with about 40 grams of concentrate per day, supplemented with fresh greens. Green material should be given on the same day to prevent contamination. Each adult should receive roughly 250 grams of green feed daily.
The breeding area must remain quiet, clean, and at a stable temperature (18–25°C) with moderate humidity (45–55%). Rodents and snakes should be kept out to maintain a safe environment. Breeders need to be attentive, monitoring the animals closely and addressing any issues promptly. Females give birth after about 56–68 days, with litters ranging from 1 to 6 offspring. Males show sexual signs at around 70 days, but mating should begin later to ensure healthy reproduction.
Newborns start eating solid food within 3–5 days and are weaned by 15–20 days, after which they are separated for individual care.
Plant extract is a kind of product that takes plant as raw material, uses appropriate solvent or method. According to the use needs of the final product, through physical and chemical extraction and separation process, directional acquisition and concentration of one or more effective components in plants, without changing the structure of its effective components. The product concept of plant extracts is relatively broad. According to the different components of the extracted plants, they form glycosides, acids, polyphenols, polysaccharides, terpenoids, flavonoids, alkaloids, etc.
