Scientific selection of meat breeders

When selecting high-quality meat pigeons for breeding, it's essential to choose superior breeds such as the American King Pigeon, Chinese Stone Dove Pigeon, Belgian Homing Pigeon, and Hong Kong Hybrid King Pigeon. These breeds are known for their strong disease resistance and rapid growth, making them ideal choices for commercial meat production. In terms of market demand, both local and international markets—especially in Hong Kong, Macau, and major hotels across China—typically require pigeons that weigh over 600 grams at four weeks of age. Therefore, when purchasing breeding pigeons, it's important to ensure they meet specific weight criteria. Males should weigh at least 650 grams, while females should be no less than 550 grams. This ensures the flock will meet industry standards and consumer expectations. The physical structure of the pigeon is also crucial. Ideal breeding pigeons should have a well-rounded body, with a full chest, a narrow waist, a broad back, short legs, a calm temperament, and good flight ability. These characteristics not only contribute to better meat quality but also make them easier to manage during breeding. Feather color plays a significant role in market preference. White-feathered pigeons are considered the most desirable for meat production, as they produce white or light yellow skin, which is highly favored by consumers. Gray, red, and yellow varieties are also acceptable, though less popular. Pigeons with dark or mottled feathers often have bluish-purple skin, which is generally less appealing to buyers. For consistency and marketability, it's best to select and breed pigeons of similar colors. Breeding pairs should be fixed and matched carefully. It's recommended to purchase more males than females, as not all pairs will successfully breed. If you're planning to raise 100 breeding pairs, start with 60–80 pairs first. After six months, assess the performance and add more based on actual results. When buying established breeding pigeons, consider the parents' weight, body structure, feather color, and breeding history. Breeds with proven performance tend to produce offspring with similar qualities. Therefore, it's wise to keep and breed the best-performing offspring from top-tier parents to continuously improve the quality of your meat pigeon flock.
