The "Squareless Watermelon" represents a groundbreaking innovation in the cultivation of Wuzi Watermelon, offering farmers an impressive net income of approximately RMB 1 million per mu. This unique watermelon variety is grown without the need for traditional square-shaped molds, yet it maintains a uniform and aesthetically pleasing shape. The production process involves several key steps that ensure high yield and quality.
First, selecting the right varieties is crucial. For open-field cultivation, varieties such as Jinbao 1, Jinmi 1, Jinmi 2, Jinshuai 1, and Jinhui 1 are ideal. For table-sculpting, Toyota 1, Shinco 2, and Xingke 3 are preferred. For greenhouse use, especially during early summer and late autumn, Toyota 2, Xingke 4, and Xingke 6 are recommended. These choices help optimize growth conditions based on the environment.
Next, planting methods and density play a significant role. The technique for growing Squareless Watermelons is similar to that of conventional watermelons. Greenhouses can support vine growth, while open fields typically use creeping vines. In open ground systems, more than 200 plants per acre are planted with row spacing of 2.5 meters and plant spacing of 1.2 meters. No pruning or spurging is required, with each plant producing 20–30 sticks, 7–8 flowers, and ultimately 4–5 fruits.
Mold design is another essential component. The molds used are cubic in shape, with side lengths ranging from 15 to 20 cm. They must be transparent, well-ventilated, and resistant to swelling. Three types of molds are commonly used: 1) Direct injection molding by glass manufacturers according to specifications; 2) Organic glass cut to size and fixed with bolts; 3) Angles and glass materials combined with bolt fixation. These options provide flexibility and durability.
When selecting the mold, it's important to apply it after pollination. The melon handle should be vertically aligned with the mold. The second and third types of molds are applied 15 days after pollination, when the fruit begins to expand. At this stage, choose strong plants with moderate fruit size, round shape, and even color. When removing the mold, handle it gently and avoid touching the stem. A small platform is built above the ground, and the mold is placed steadily. Then, the vine leaves are trimmed carefully.
After 5–7 days of field management, the molds should remain stable. From then on, they should be flipped every 3–5 days to ensure even growth. Fertilizer and irrigation must be carefully managed, with increased organic fertilizer application and the use of biological pesticides to maintain high-quality standards. This ensures the watermelons meet AA-grade green food criteria.
Harvesting occurs 15–20 days after ripening. The watermelons are packaged without any external packaging. During harvesting, leave 3–5 leaves on the vines, gently remove the molds and vines from the field, place them on a carpeted table, and carefully open the molds using gloves. Transfer the watermelons to a cool, dry area for 2–3 hours. Remove the petiole, leaves, and excess shoots, keeping 2–3 guava vines. Place them in a foam mesh bag, tie them in boxes (3–4 boxes per tier), and surround the box with foam boards. Add ventilation holes and seal the box for transport. This careful handling ensures the product reaches the market in optimal condition.
