How to prevent sows from estrus

First, it's essential to identify the underlying cause of non-estrus in sows. Several factors can influence estrus, including breed type, exposure to boars, seasonal changes, weather conditions, lactation period, number of piglets, housing environment, nutritional status, and overall management practices. Proper feeding and management play a crucial role, as poor nutrition can lead to underweight sows, while excessive nutrition may result in obesity, both of which can disrupt normal estrous cycles. Once the cause is determined, targeted interventions should be implemented to address the issue effectively. Second, delaying puberty in gilts can be managed by moving them to different housing areas, increasing their exposure to boars, expanding their living space, or providing access to green forage. In addition, administering 300–500 IU of gonadotropin via intravenous or intramuscular injection may help stimulate estrus. Third, for sows that have recently weaned, subcutaneous or intramuscular injections of 15–25 ml of pregnant mare serum or whole blood can be beneficial. Alternatively, 1000–1500 IU of pregnant hormone serum gonadotropin can be given intramuscularly once or twice. Another option is to administer chorionic gonadotropin at 500–1000 IU via intravenous or intramuscular route, repeated every one to two days. Fourth, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) can be used at a dose of 100–300 IU, administered intravenously or intramuscularly every other day for three to four sessions. This not only helps induce ovulation in sows showing signs of estrus but also improves breeding success rates, including conception and farrowing rates.
