Yipinxiu Green Cucumber and Its Cultivation Techniques

Yipinxiu Green Cucumber is a newly introduced variety from Japan, known for its high yield and excellent quality. It is ideal for protected cultivation in spring and autumn, as well as for early spring open-field production. This variety is particularly suitable for regions with moderate climates and offers good adaptability to different growing conditions. **Key Features** The Yipinxiu Green Cucumber plant has a medium growth habit with limited branching, primarily producing vines. The fruit is straight and cylindrical, typically measuring around 20 cm in length and 3 cm in diameter, with an average weight of about 128 grams. The skin is bright green, and the flavor is crisp and delicious, making it highly marketable. It exhibits strong resistance to low temperatures and weak light, as well as good immunity against diseases such as wilt, downy mildew, powdery mildew, and bacterial angular spot. **Cultivation Techniques** For optimal results, sowing should be done between January and early February for early spring cultivation, and from August to mid-September for late autumn planting. Seedlings can be started using plug trays, nutrient bowls, or soil blocks. A mix of peat-based soil is commonly used, and germination occurs best at temperatures between 24–26°C. Seedlings usually emerge within 4 days under normal conditions. After emergence, maintain daytime temperatures between 23–28°C and nighttime temperatures between 16–18°C. In late autumn cultivation, it's recommended to use a small greenhouse over the seedbed. For early spring planting, straw mulch should be added after covering the greenhouse to provide extra insulation. During the seedling stage, water sparingly and apply foliar fertilizer regularly. Keep the seedlings at a lower temperature for about a week before transplanting to strengthen them. Before planting, prepare the soil thoroughly by applying more than 4,000 kg of organic fertilizer per mu (approximately 1/15 hectare), along with 50–80 kg of compound fertilizer. Deep plowing and soil sterilization are essential steps. Create raised beds that are 1–1.2 meters wide, and plant two rows per bed. Transplant seedlings when they have 2–4 true leaves, with an age of 25–30 days. The planting density should be around 3,500–3,700 plants per mu. After planting, water the seedlings once every 3–4 days. From then on, water every 5–7 days and apply fertilizer each time. Use 10 kg of urea per mu with each watering. During the fruiting period, apply 20 kg of compound fertilizer per mu along with irrigation, and spray a 0.2%–0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution once a week. Maintain air humidity at around 50%. Within one week of transplanting, keep the daytime temperature between 25–30°C and the nighttime temperature between 16–18°C. To promote a strong root system, remove all fruits below the fifth leaf and trim lateral branches up to the fifth node. After the fifth node, allow 1–2 leaves to remain before pinching off the tip. The number of lateral branches selected depends on the plant’s growth and should not be too dense. Support the vines with trellises and guide the tendrils properly. **Pest and Disease Management** It is important to monitor for pests and diseases early on. Prevention is key, so regular inspections and timely application of appropriate treatments are necessary. Always prioritize preventive measures and use chemical controls only when needed. This approach ensures healthier plants and better yields.
