There is no gray swan in the world

There are five species of swans found around the world, including the black swan and the black-necked swan. In addition, there are three types of white swans: the mute swan, the whooper swan, and the trumpeter swan. While the black swan is not protected, the other four are classified as second-level protected animals in many regions. Due to their migratory behavior, it's quite challenging to breed large swans and their young in captivity. However, in recent years, the mute swan has been successfully raised in captivity, with each pair typically laying 4 to 6 eggs per year. In recent years, some swan breeders have questioned whether a "grey swan" exists. In fact, there is no such species as a grey swan. What is commonly referred to as a grey swan is likely the French Landes goose, which is not a true swan but a type of goose used for foie gras production. Foie gras is a well-known French delicacy often found on menus in Western restaurants. The Landes goose has a grayish body, an orange-yellow beak, and short, thick legs. It usually lays about 10 to 15 eggs between October and May, with an average annual egg production of 40 to 50. In China, the price of Landes goose chicks ranges from 10 to 20 yuan, while adult geese can be sold for 7 to 9 yuan per catty. Each goose can fetch 70 to 100 yuan, and fat liver products (weighing 1.5 to 1.8 kg) are priced between 100 to 130 yuan. Additionally, there is a bird often mistaken for a swan online, known as the French Muscovy duck. This species was introduced to China several decades ago, especially in southern regions, and is now widely farmed. The price of Muscovy ducks is around 6 to 8 yuan per catty. These ducks come in black, white, or black-and-white colors, and they typically weigh between 5 to 10 pounds. Male ducks have red growths on their beaks, making them easily distinguishable. To tell the difference between a real swan and other birds, one key feature is the length of the neck. True swans have long necks that are significantly longer than their bodies. From a breeding perspective, white swans like the mute swan are primarily kept for ornamental purposes since they rarely lay eggs. In contrast, black swans can both be观赏 (watched) and bred, providing eggs and meat for the market. With growing demand, the future of black swan farming looks promising.
