New technology can increase rapeseed output by 4 times

At the 2007 National Science and Technology Awards Conference in Beijing, a groundbreaking technology titled "Low-Temperature Oil Production and Deep Protein Processing of Oils" from Macheng, Hubei Province, was awarded the Second Prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award. Led by Li Yuanliang, Chairman of Huayi Biotechnology and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, this innovative project was developed over seven years by Professor Huang Fenghong from the Oil Research Institute and Professor Wu Moucheng from Huazhong Agricultural University, with research funding exceeding RMB 14 million. Once implemented, this technology is expected to significantly boost the value of rapeseed in China, increasing its output value from 600 billion to 240 billion yuan. It also aims to raise the utilization rate of over 8 million tons of rapeseed cake annually, from 25% to 95%, addressing critical food security challenges. The technology plays a vital role in upgrading the rapeseed processing industry, optimizing industry structure, reducing protein shortages, improving food safety, and promoting environmental protection. Experts estimate that this innovation could directly increase farmers' income by 500 yuan per mu. It solves long-standing issues in crude oil processing, such as high-temperature pre-pressing that damages rapeseed protein and leads to resource waste. The protein content in rapeseed cake has risen from 36% to over 60%, while anti-nutrients have been nearly eliminated. With high technological value, comprehensive resource utilization, and a circular economy model, this technology offers a sustainable alternative to imports, contributing to national food security and environmental protection. The project has earned four national patents, three international advanced-level appraisals, one domestic exclusive enterprise standard, the Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Progress First Prize, and the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Achievement Award. Currently, Huayi Company has launched a 40,000-ton vegetable oil deep-processing project in Macheng Industrial Park, investing 32 million yuan. Once completed, it is expected to generate 240 million yuan in sales revenue and 3.5 million yuan in additional profits and taxes. The project will support 170,000 pig breeding units and 20,000 mu of aquaculture, driving 100,000 farmers to expand rapeseed production and pig farming, directly boosting annual farmer income by over 90 million yuan. Scientific assessments confirm that Huayi is the first company globally to implement large-scale industrialization of deep rapeseed protein processing, marking a significant milestone in agricultural technology.
