Growing over Wang rapeseed management measures

This year's autumn and winter has seen above-average temperatures, leading to vigorous growth of rapeseed seedlings. Some fields still show the robust growth typically observed during the Tian Ersheng stage, even after entering the wintering period. Along certain riverbanks, rapeseed plants have up to 15 green leaves, and the overall growth remains strong with no signs of slowing down. For instance, on January 3rd, an investigation at De Zao No. 11 revealed an average of 15.4 green leaves per plant. More than 90% of the leaves had bolted, with a stem height of 13.2 cm, a stem thickness of 2.46 cm, and an opening width of 95.2 cm. The overgrowth is clearly visible. Such vigorous growth can lead to early flowering and premature bolting, making the plants more vulnerable to early seasoning. Moreover, if winter temperatures suddenly drop, these lush seedlings are at high risk of frost damage. To manage this situation effectively, the following measures should be taken: First, it is important to remove the main rosette early and apply additional fertilizers. In fields where early moss removal has already occurred, the primary rosette should be removed promptly to reduce nutrient waste and encourage the development of primary and secondary branches, which can help maintain yield levels. It’s best to perform this task on sunny days, avoiding periods of cold weather to prevent wounds from rotting or becoming infected. After removing the rosette, top-dressing with 5 to 10 kg of urea and 10 kg of compound fertilizer per acre is recommended. The removed rosettes can be used as animal feed or compost. Second, cultivating the soil and slightly damaging the roots can help control excessive growth. For crops showing early signs of bolting, loose soil cultivation can damage part of the root system, delaying the onset of early flowering. This method can also slow down the growth process by reducing the plant’s vigor. Fields with poor soil fertility, long-lasting pods, or tall transplant varieties may benefit from additional fertilizer application. Third, applying plant growth inhibitors is another effective strategy. If the base fertilizer contains high levels of nitrogen and the seedlings are excessively vigorous, chemical growth regulators can be used. A common practice is to spray 50 kg of water mixed with 15% paclobutrazol per mu, focusing on the foliage. In addition to these steps, proper field management such as draining ditches, applying ash, and protecting against frost should not be overlooked. These combined efforts will help ensure healthier rapeseed crops and better yields in the coming season.
