Roses are deciduous shrubs belonging to the Rosaceae family and have long been cherished as ornamental flowers in China. Known for their vibrant colors, elegant shapes, and pleasant fragrance, they symbolize love and friendship. Beyond their beauty, roses also offer health benefits, containing 18 types of amino acids and essential trace elements that support overall well-being. Medical research has shown that they may help improve cardiovascular health, making them a valuable addition to both food and medicine.
In recent years, the cultivation and use of edible roses have grown significantly in China, driven by increasing demand. As more people recognize their culinary and medicinal value, the area dedicated to rose farming is expected to expand further.
When cultivating roses, it's important to consider their environmental needs. They thrive in full sunlight, requiring at least 6–8 hours of direct light daily. Insufficient light can lead to weak growth and fewer blooms. During hot summer months, some varieties, like purple roses, may experience flower discoloration or deformation. To enhance flower production, partial shading might be necessary. Roses prefer warm and humid conditions, with ideal temperatures ranging from 15–25°C and humidity below 80%. Well-drained, loamy soil with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5 is most suitable.
Several rose varieties are commonly cultivated, including the traditional double rose, the four-season purple rose, and the high-yield Pingyin No. 1 and No. 3. Each variety has unique characteristics, such as bloom time, color, and disease resistance, making them suitable for different growing conditions.
Propagation of roses is typically done through grafting, using wild roses or thornless dog roses as rootstocks. This method ensures strong, healthy plants. Cuttings can also be used, though they tend to have shorter lifespans and weaker root systems.
Proper care includes selecting appropriate land, preparing the soil with disinfection and organic fertilization, planting at the right spacing, regular pruning, and effective pest control. Harvesting should occur when buds are still closed, ensuring the best quality. After harvesting, roses can be dried or processed into products like rose syrup, which can be stored for long periods and used in various recipes.
With proper cultivation techniques and attention to detail, roses can continue to flourish, offering both aesthetic and practical value.
