Cultivation of pests and diseases of shiitake mushrooms

The cultivation of shiitake mushrooms during off-season periods—typically between June and September—requires careful management to ensure optimal growth and high-quality yield. One of the biggest challenges during this time is pest control, as improper measures can significantly reduce both the quantity and quality of the harvest. To prevent such issues, a comprehensive approach to pest prevention and management must be implemented.
First and foremost, it's essential to eliminate potential insect sources around the mushroom growing area. This includes cleaning up nearby toilets, animal enclosures (such as chicken coops, pigsties, and cattle pens), and garbage disposal sites. Ideally, these areas should be relocated if possible. If not, regular spraying with insecticides like dichlorvos should be carried out. Special attention should be given to large fecal piles, where eggs of pests like mosquitoes and fly species may be present. These can be effectively controlled through high-temperature composting, surface spraying, or other preventive methods to stop the breeding cycle.
Secondly, the surrounding areas within 50 meters of the mushroom shed should be treated regularly. A weekly application of an 800-times diluted dichlorvos solution is recommended for larger, contiguous areas. For individual sheds, targeted treatments around the structure can be effective. It's especially important to apply these treatments within the first one to two days after rainfall, when pests are more active and vulnerable.
Third, the mushroom shed itself needs proper protection. All entry points, including vents and doors, should be sealed to prevent insects from entering. High-density insect-proof nets should be installed on windows and openings. Alternatively, regular screens can be reinforced with layers of cotton cloth for added protection. In more advanced setups, a buffer room can be constructed to further reduce the risk of pests entering the growing area.
Finally, inside the shed, a 200–300 times diluted insect repellent solution can be sprayed every 2–4 days, depending on the level of pest activity. The focus should be on entry points and ventilation areas. During the fruiting stage, it’s also safe to directly spray the mushrooms with non-toxic, residue-free, and eco-friendly pesticides to maintain quality without compromising safety. By implementing these strategies, growers can significantly improve their chances of successful off-season shiitake production.
