Lushui, or "southern water," refers to food scraps collected from hotels, restaurants, schools, and factories. Due to its low cost and high nutritional value, it serves as an excellent feed for ducks. When treated with the Golden Baby Starter, harmful bacteria in the water are effectively eliminated. The nutrients in the fermented Material are significantly enhanced, leading to better absorption by animals. After microbial treatment, the water can meet feed standards and is highly beneficial for duck growth.
1. **Fermentation Process**
The collected Lushui, which is mostly rice (over 50%), is placed into a container. For every 500 kg of Lushui, add 50 kg of corn (or 100 kg if not rice-based; if rice content is over 70%, no corn needed). Add 30 kg of soybean meal, or alternatives like rapeseed meal, cottonseed meal, or peanut bran. Include 50–150 kg of rice bran or reconstituted rice bran. The moisture level should be such that when you squeeze the mixture, a few drops of water fall—this ensures proper anaerobic conditions. You can also use straw powder, such as peanut stalk or shell powder, as an alternative. Additionally, add 5 kg of calcium hydrogen phosphate or superphosphate to fill the container completely, minimizing air exposure. This helps create an anaerobic environment, preventing harmful bacteria from growing. Cover the container with plastic film and secure it tightly with a rubber rope—no need for full airtightness, just enough to prevent expansion due to gas buildup during fermentation. Fermentation typically takes 1–3 days, starting with bubbles and progressing to a more acidic, koji-like aroma.
2. **Vitamin Supplementation**
When feeding ducks, add 25 g of vitamins per 100 kg of fermented material to avoid deficiencies that could hinder growth.
3. **Precautions**
Before fermentation, there's no need to remove hard objects like toothpicks, fish bones, glass, or plastic bags. However, these must be removed before fermentation completes, as they can cause intestinal damage if eaten by ducks. Bones and raw meat in the water do not need to be removed—they can be directly fermented. The material must contain both plant and animal matter, such as rice and porridge, to support microbial growth. Pure hot pot waste may not ferment properly, so adding energy sources like rice or corn is essential.
4. **Fermentation Time**
Fermentation time varies: 2–3 days in summer, 3–4 days in spring and autumn, and 4–7 days in winter.
5. **Benefits of the New Method**
The addition of fermented soybean meal ensures hydrophobic protein levels around 18%. Calcium dihydrogen phosphate or superphosphate not only aids fermentation but also addresses phosphorus and calcium deficiencies. The Golden Baby Starter breaks down crude fiber in rice bran, reed mill, and straw, reducing acidity and alcohol content while increasing sugar levels, improving palatability. Adding vitamins during use prevents vitamin deficiencies in the final product.
6. **Combining with Other Byproducts**
Lushui can also be fermented with distiller’s grains, cassava residue, etc. Mix them in equal parts and follow similar procedures. Many users have found this method very effective.
7. **Storage and Hygiene**
Once fermented, the material must be sealed and stored. With proper sealing, it can last up to six months without degradation. After feeding, clean and disinfect the fermentation tank immediately. Ensure the fermentation area is cleaned and disinfected after each batch to prevent bacterial growth.
8. **Duck Feed Formulation**
A reference formula for duck mash includes local ingredients like wheat bran, rice bran, wheat flour, sorghum flour, hay powder, green fodder, peanut bran, vegetable oil cake, sunflower cake, sesame cake, limestone, meat meal, and bone meal. These can replace or supplement standard feed materials. For example, local protein sources can substitute for commercial ones, but balance must be maintained. Users with access to methionine can add 0.05% to broiler formulas.
9. **Usage Tips**
Start with small amounts and gradually increase. Begin with 10% of the total feed and slowly raise the proportion. Before feeding, let the fermented material sit for at least 30 minutes to allow gases to escape.
