Corn harvest can increase production

Through years of research and practical experience, the authors have demonstrated that harvesting corn at the right time can significantly extend the grain-filling period and boost overall yield. Corn reaches its peak yield only when it is fully mature. Harvesting too early results in underdeveloped grains, lower weight per kernel, and ultimately reduced productivity. In some regions, farmers tend to harvest corn prematurely, often when the ears just start turning white. At this stage, the 1000-grain weight is typically around 90% of what it would be at full maturity, and the overall yield can drop by approximately 10%. In addition to increasing yield, proper late harvesting also enhances the nutritional quality of corn. It boosts the protein and amino acid content, improves starch levels, and enriches other essential nutrients. Late-harvested corn tends to have more uniform kernels, fewer small or damaged grains, and a lower moisture content, which makes threshing and storage easier and more efficient. To achieve optimal late harvesting, several key practices should be followed: 1. Determine the right time based on plant development. Some modern corn varieties exhibit "false ripening," where the leaves turn yellow or white before the grains are fully mature. Farmers should look for signs such as the disappearance of milky fluid from the lower kernels, a grain moisture content of about 30%, and the grains becoming firm and loose. The formation of the black layer at the base of the kernels is another reliable indicator that the corn is ready for harvest. 2. Dry the husks immediately after harvesting. Avoid piling harvested corn together. Instead, remove the husks while still on the stalk or bring them home and dry them using artificial methods. This not only helps reduce moisture but also promotes better drying, saving labor and improving the quality of the final product. 3. Thresh and dry promptly. Late-harvested corn usually has a moisture content of 30% to 40%. Farmers should monitor weather forecasts and choose sunny days for drying. Once the moisture drops to 20%–30%, they should proceed with threshing and further drying until the moisture level is below 14%, ensuring safe storage and long-term preservation.
