Buying seedlings should pay attention to six points

When selecting varieties, it is essential that they have been approved by a high-level approval committee and are suitable for local growing conditions. Some local cultivars may be influenced by geographical location or environmental factors, leading to low yields and poor quality when grown elsewhere. Additionally, some varieties are still in the experimental or demonstration phase, meaning no official approval has been granted. In such cases, only trial planting is permitted, and large-scale development should not be pursued blindly.
Recognizing the correct variety is crucial, as the nursery market can be quite confusing. There are often multiple products with similar names, making it difficult to distinguish between actual varieties and generic products. In some cases, substandard seedlings are sold under misleading labels, which is a serious issue. Therefore, buyers must exercise caution and verify the authenticity of the variety before purchasing.
When choosing a supplier, it's important to consider the nursery’s technical expertise, as the quality of seedlings can vary significantly. It is advisable to compare several options. Seedlings from agricultural extension agencies, agricultural science academies, and universities are generally more reliable, as they are less likely to sell inferior stock and are accountable if issues arise. Always ensure that a contract is signed and an invoice is obtained to guarantee quality assurance.
Inspecting the mother garden is also important. A reputable nursery will maintain a well-established mother garden or have a sufficient number of mature mother trees, which serve as the source of scions for new plantings. Avoid seedlings grafted onto high-risk trees, as they carry a higher risk of viral infections.
Scientific selection of seedlings is key to successful cultivation. When purchasing, look for seedlings that meet specific quality standards: the stem should be thick, at least 1 cm in diameter at 20 cm above the root collar; there should be at least six healthy shoots within the plastic sleeve; the root system should be complete, with five or more lateral roots, each at least 20 cm long; the height of the seedling should be between 20–40 cm; the bark and stem should be intact without signs of drying, shrinkage, or damage; and the rootstock used for grafting should be strong and resilient to stress.
Finally, pest and quarantine inspections are essential to prevent the spread of harmful pests and diseases. Before transporting seedlings, proper documentation such as a quarantine permit, seedling transport permit, and seedling quality appraisal certificate must be obtained to ensure compliance with regulations.
