Lee and Apricot Tree Management After Harvesting

After the fruiting season, plum and apricot trees have used up a significant amount of nutrients. To restore their vitality and prepare for the next year’s flowering and fruiting, it's essential to apply fertilizers promptly after harvesting. This helps boost the leaves’ photosynthetic activity, replenish the tree’s energy, and ensure sufficient nutrients are available for flower bud formation, which is crucial for high yields in the following season.
**1. Fertilizer Management**
It is recommended to top-dress with urea and a phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer. Typically, 0.3 to 0.5 kg of urea per tree and 0.2 to 0.3 kg of potassium dihydrogen phosphate should be applied. Watering immediately after application helps speed up nutrient absorption. Additionally, foliar feeding can be done by spraying a solution of 0.2% to 0.3% urea and 0.2% to 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate during pest control.
Incorporating organic fertilizers is also important. It’s best to apply them in mid to late September. High-quality manures like chicken or sheep manure, along with composted materials, are ideal. Adding a small amount of superphosphate improves decomposition and root uptake. Each tree should receive about 20-30 kg of organic fertilizer and 1 kg of superphosphate, mixed into open trenches. Watering should follow immediately after fertilization. During dry periods, if no rain occurs for 15-20 days, irrigation should be done early. In rainy seasons, proper drainage is necessary. Before freezing, water should be poured around the roots to prevent frost damage.
**2. Pruning Practices**
After fruiting, pruning should be done carefully. The principle is “not too late, not too heavy.†Focus on removing dead, overlapping, or drooping branches, as well as those that hinder growth. For each main branch, retain a dorsal branch every 30-40 cm, and remove excess ones early. For the branches left, cut back to 20-30 cm to encourage new growth. After pruning, it's important to spray the tree with a disinfectant to protect the wounds from infection and promote healing.
**3. Pest and Disease Control**
Post-harvest, pests such as leafhoppers and spider mites become more active, especially between July and September. A mixture of imidacloprid (3,000 times dilution) and Qi Qi Prime (6,000 times dilution) can be sprayed effectively. Bacterial spot is a common disease during this time, and can be managed using a mix of engine oil, mancozeb, and water at a ratio of 10:1:500. This treatment also helps control scale insects and leafhoppers. When applying insecticides, adding a new high-fat film can enhance effectiveness and provide broader protection against pests and diseases.
**4. Orchard Cleanliness and Tree Protection**
After leaf fall, it’s important to clear the orchard of fallen leaves, weeds, and rotten fruits. These should be buried deeply or burned to reduce overwintering sites for pests and pathogens. Trees should be thoroughly sprayed with a disinfectant, and trunks should be protected from cold. Painting the trunks with a white wash can help prevent frost damage and kill germs. Before painting, old bark should be scraped off, focusing on the trunk and major branches. The white wash should be applied evenly, without dripping or uneven spots, and a thin layer is preferred. A diluted white wash at 3% concentration can also be used. (China Plant Protection Network: Wei Linfei)
