Sexual reproduction of gentian
Sexual reproduction, particularly through seeds, is the primary method used for propagating gentian. This process involves growing new plants from seeds, which are typically referred to as seedlings once they start to develop.
Gentian seeds have a relatively short lifespan and should not be stored for extended periods. If kept at room temperature, their viability decreases significantly after just one year. Freshly harvested seeds usually have a germination rate between 60% and 80%, but this drops quickly if not used promptly. The small and delicate nature of the seeds makes them sensitive to environmental conditions, requiring higher temperatures and increased humidity for successful germination. Due to these challenges, direct sowing in the field often leads to low success rates. As a result, it's more effective to start the seeds indoors or in controlled environments before transplanting the young seedlings into their final growing location. This method ensures better survival and healthier growth of the gentian plants.
