Field Management of "Five Essentials" in Flue-cured Tobacco

1. Top the plants at the right time. The best time to top tobacco plants depends on soil conditions and plant growth. When topping, ensure that the top leaves are spread out evenly to form a flat canopy. Usually, 16 to 20 healthy leaves should be left on the plant, and the topping process should be done about one week before the final harvest.

2. Remove early flowers as soon as they appear. Typically, early flowering occurs around 40 days after transplanting. If not managed, early flowers can lower both yield and quality of the tobacco leaves. Once detected, take immediate action. In severe cases, cut off the main stem and leave only 2 or 3 leaves. Once axillary buds start growing, choose the strongest one and remove the others. For mild cases, you can either top the plant or cut the main stem and set it aside.

3. Manage fertilization carefully. Tobacco plants generally require moderate nitrogen levels. Excessive nitrogen can lead to poor quality. During the mid to late growth stages, it's beneficial to apply foliar sprays of potassium dihydrogen phosphate. Water the plants according to weather conditions, ensuring proper moisture without overwatering.

4. Prevent and control pests and diseases. Common issues include climate spot disease, brown spot disease, mosaic virus, and locusts. For climate spot disease, apply mancozeb or zinc at a dilution of 500 to 600 times as soon as symptoms are noticed. For other diseases, use 50% tetromycin, carbendazim, or moxa diluted at 500 times, along with an appropriate amount of a new high-fat membrane. Apply these treatments 2 to 3 times in the early stages, with a 10 to 15-day interval between applications.

5. Harvest at the right time. Proper timing is crucial for maximizing quality. Different parts of the plant reach maturity at different times. Lower leaves should show a green-to-yellow-green color change, have a slightly drooping tip, and the main veins should turn white. Middle leaves will turn yellow, with yellow patches appearing on the surface, and the angle between the leaf and the stem will increase. Upper leaves turn from green to white, with white patches on the surface, the main vein turns white, and the entire leaf sags. (Source: China Plant Protection Network - Wei Linfei)
