Treatment of ash fly to prevent injury

When rice and corn fields are infested by Laodelphax striatellus, frequent and large-scale pesticide applications are often necessary to manage the pest population. However, in recent years, incidents caused by improper pesticide use on young rice and corn plants have become increasingly common. To address this issue, researcher Yang Rongming from the provincial plant protection station has issued a warning: when handling SBPH (Small Brown Planthopper), it is crucial to follow safe pesticide application practices. Dichlorvos is a highly fumigant insecticide that works well for controlling pests in wheat fields. However, its use in paddy rice fields is not recommended due to safety concerns, as it can cause leaf burn and damage to young seedlings. Rice fields should avoid using dichlorvos altogether. If it must be used, strict guidelines must be followed. For example, 80% dichlorvos emulsifiable concentrate can be mixed with 200 ml of water and applied at a rate of 30–45 kg per acre, ensuring even coverage. Alternatively, 150 ml of 80% dichlorvos EC can be mixed with 20–25 kg of dry soil and spread evenly after the field has dried. When applying the treated soil, care must be taken to avoid getting any moisture on the rice leaves. After application, gently brush the seedlings with a bamboo vine to help distribute the pesticide evenly across the field. Repeated use of dichlorvos should be avoided to prevent phytotoxicity. In corn fields, organic phosphorus and pyrethroid insecticides are commonly used to control Laodelphax striatellus. However, it is essential to strictly control the concentration of the solution, as improper dilution can lead to crop damage. For instance, 50% rice oil is typically diluted 1000–1200 times, while 48% chlorpyrifos should be diluted no less than 1000 times. Pyrethroid pesticides are generally used at a dilution of 2000–3000 times. It's important to note that dichlorvos, phoxim, and fenvalerate are known to cause phytotoxicity in corn and are therefore not recommended for use in these fields. Proper training and adherence to safety protocols are essential to ensure both effective pest control and the protection of crops. Farmers should always refer to the latest guidelines and consult local agricultural experts before applying any pesticide.
