Treatment of ash fly to prevent injury

When rice and corn fields are infested with Laodelphax striatellus, frequent and large-scale pesticide applications are often necessary to manage the pest population. However, in recent years, there have been multiple incidents of plant damage caused by improper pesticide use on young rice and corn seedlings. In response, researcher Yang Rongming from the provincial plant protection station has issued a warning, emphasizing the importance of safe pesticide application when dealing with SBPH (Small Brown Planthopper). Dichlorvos is a highly fumigant insecticide that works well for controlling pests in wheat fields. However, its use in paddy rice fields is considered unsafe and can lead to leaf burn or even crop damage. Therefore, it should be avoided in rice paddies whenever possible. If it must be used, strict adherence to application guidelines is essential. Typically, 80% dichlorvos emulsifiable concentrate is diluted with 200 ml per acre in 30–45 kg of water, and sprayed evenly. Alternatively, 150 ml of 80% dichlorvos EC can be mixed with 20–25 kg of dry soil and applied after the field has dried. When applying the treated soil, care should be taken to avoid getting any moisture on the rice leaves. After application, gently brush the seedlings with a bamboo vine to help distribute the pesticide evenly across the field. Repeated use of dichlorvos should be avoided to prevent phytotoxicity. In corn fields, organic phosphorus and pyrethroid insecticides are commonly used to control Laodelphax striatellus. However, the concentration of the solution must be carefully controlled to avoid causing harm to the plants. For example, 50% rice oil is typically diluted at a ratio of 1000–1200 times, while 48% chlorpyrifos should be diluted no less than 1000 times, ideally up to 2000 times. Pyrethroid pesticides are generally used at a dilution of 2000–3000 times. It's important to note that dichlorvos, phoxim, and fenvalerate are more likely to cause phytotoxicity in corn and are therefore not recommended for use in these fields. By following these guidelines, farmers can reduce the risk of crop damage and ensure safer, more effective pest management practices.
