Drought-resistant wheat can be used to suppress the method

At present, the entire country is implementing anti-drought irrigation for wheat fields. However, in areas with limited water resources, early spring soil compression—also known as "wheat field suppression"—is one of the most economical and effective methods to combat drought and protect crop growth. This technique helps compact the soil, filling in cracks and reducing moisture evaporation. It also encourages deeper root development by promoting better water absorption, ensuring that spring wheat can grow healthily even under dry conditions.
**Method of Soil Compression**
1. In flat areas where machinery is available, it's best to utilize tractors equipped with iron rakes or stone rakes for efficient compression. These tools are typically made from iron pipes, around 2 meters long, with a diameter of 30–40 cm and a wall thickness of 1.6 cm. Under normal tractor speed, one operator can compress approximately 100 mu (about 6.7 acres) per day. Stone rakes, which were traditionally used by farmers, can be modified by replacing wooden frames with steel ones. Due to their shorter length and less flexible frame, the tractor should not move too fast, allowing about 60–80 mu to be compressed daily. If using the tractor directly for compression, it's recommended to follow a circular pattern, covering roughly 50 mu each day.
2. On mountainous slopes where machinery cannot be used, large animals such as oxen can be employed to pull stone rakes. These rakes can also be adapted from traditional models by reinforcing the wooden frames with metal. One person can manage about 8 mu per day using this method.
3. In areas without large livestock, manual compression can still be effective. Farmers should step on the ridges rather than the tops of the rows, moving forward along the ridge. Although the pressure applied manually is lighter, it's important to repeat the process 2–3 times for better results. A single worker can compress about 1 mu (approximately 0.067 acres) per day through this method.
**Important Considerations for Compression**
1. The compression method should be adjusted according to local conditions, including terrain and available resources.
2. It’s best to perform compression after the wheat has turned green and new leaves have emerged. Choose sunny days between 11 am and 4 pm to avoid damaging the tender foliage.
3. Once the wheat enters the jointing stage, further compression should be avoided, as it may harm the plant’s growth.
By following these techniques and precautions, farmers can effectively manage water scarcity and support healthy wheat development during critical growth periods.
