At present, the entire country is implementing anti-drought irrigation for wheat fields. However, in areas with limited water resources, early spring soil compression has become one of the most economical and effective methods to combat drought and protect wheat crops. **Method of Soil Compression**
1. In flat areas where machinery is available, it's essential to make full use of it. Tractors equipped with iron rakes or stone rakes can be used for compression. Alternatively, tractors can directly press the soil. Iron rakes are typically made of iron pipes, 2 meters long, with a diameter of 30-40 cm and a wall thickness of 1.6 cm. Under normal tractor speed, one person can compress about 100 mu (approx. 6.7 hectares) per day. Stone rakes, traditionally used by farmers, can be modified by replacing wooden frames with steel ones. Due to their shorter length and less flexible frame, the tractor should not move too fast, allowing for approximately 60-80 mu per day. When using the tractor directly for compression, it's best to follow a circular pattern, enabling the machine to cover about 50 mu daily.
2. On mountainous slopes where machinery cannot be used, large animals such as oxen can be employed to pull stone rakes. These rakes can also be modified from traditional models, replacing wooden frames with stronger metal ones. This method allows for about 8 mu of compression per day.
3. In areas without large livestock, manual compression can still be effective. Farmers should step on the ridges rather than the backs of the rows, moving forward along the ridge. Although manual pressure is lighter and less effective than mechanical methods, it should be done 2-3 times to ensure proper compaction. One person can typically compress around 1 mu (approx. 0.067 hectares) per day.
**Important Considerations for Soil Compression**
1. The chosen method of compression should be adapted to local conditions, including terrain, available tools, and labor resources.
2. It's best to perform compression after the new green leaves of the wheat have emerged. Choose a sunny day between 11 am and 4 pm to avoid damaging the tender new foliage.
3. Once the wheat enters the jointing stage, further compression should stop, as it may harm the plant’s development.
By following these practices, farmers can effectively manage water scarcity and support healthy wheat growth during critical periods.
