**Scientific Name:** *Cuphea hookeriana*
**Common Name:** Purple Star
**Alternative Latin Name:** *Cuphea hyssopifolia*
**Family:** Lythraceae
**Origin:** Native to Mexico, this plant is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions due to its vibrant appearance and adaptability.
**Morphology:**
This small shrub typically grows upright, reaching a height of 30–60 cm. The stems are covered with sticky or bristly hairs. Leaves are opposite, long ovate or elliptic in shape, with an acute tip. The midvein is raised on the underside, and they are petiolate. Flowers appear at the ends or in the axils of branches, with pedicels measuring 2–6 mm (sometimes up to 15 mm). The calyx is 16–24 mm long, hairy or coarsely hairy, and the base is spaced. There are six petals, usually purple-red in color, with two larger ones on the abaxial side that are nearly circular, while the other four are smaller and obovate or obovate-round. The pistil is slightly prominent.
The plant has multiple branches, with leaves varying in shape—some are linear, lanceolate, or narrow. Flowers are solitary, with a purple calyx tube and colors ranging from lilac to white. It blooms continuously from spring through autumn, with new flowers appearing as the branches grow.
**Growth Habits:**
This plant thrives in high temperatures and is somewhat shade-tolerant. It is not frost-resistant and can suffer damage when temperatures drop below 5°C. It is resilient to poor soils and adapts well to various growing conditions.
It is easy to cultivate and manage. Full sun or partial shade is ideal, though it can still grow in slightly shaded areas. However, more sunlight leads to stronger growth. It adapts well to different soil types, but sandy loam promotes better development. It is moisture-tolerant. After planting seedlings, pruning once helps encourage branching. During the growing season, fertilizing every 1–2 months with organic or balanced NPK fertilizer is recommended. Taller or overcrowded plants should be trimmed regularly. The optimal temperature range for growth is 18–32°C. In spring, spider mites can be controlled using natural predators or insecticides.
**Ornamental Use:**
*Cuphea hookeriana* is known for its lush foliage, dark green and glossy leaves, and showy flowers. It is easy to shape, resistant to pruning, and offers strong ornamental value. It has been introduced and cultivated in provinces like Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, and Fujian in China, where it is widely used in landscaping.
It is suitable for creating short hedges around gardens, bordering flower beds, or planting in open spaces in clusters to create a striking visual effect. It can also be planted under trees or paired with evergreen shrubs and other flowering plants to enhance landscape design. Additionally, it can be used to cover the ground, suppressing weed growth, and is also popular as a potted plant.
