Origin and distribution: Native to East China, Central China, and regions such as Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, and Yunnan. It thrives in forests, valleys, and moist areas near streams. It is also found in the Korean Peninsula and Japan.
Morphological characteristics: A small evergreen shrub, typically 10–30 cm tall. The stems are upright and hairy when young. The rhizome is long and horizontal, with a dark red color and slender adventitious roots. Leaves are alternate, leathery, often arranged in pairs or 3–4 at the stem tip. They are narrow oval to wide oval in shape, with a light green upper surface and a lighter green underside.
Flowers are small and form umbrella-like racemes, usually white or pink. The fruit is a spherical drupe that turns red when ripe and remains on the plant for a long time. Related species include A. crenata and A. mamillata.
Flowering period: June to September; fruiting period: August to December.
Growth habits: Thrives in humid and shaded environments. Prefers moist locations, often growing in forests, valleys, and along streams. Highly shade-tolerant and requires consistent moisture.
Applications: Its attractive red fruits that remain on the plant for a long time make it an excellent ornamental plant for shaded, moist areas such as under trees on hillsides. The whole plant or its roots and root bark are used in traditional medicine. Harvesting can be done year-round.
Medicinal value: The whole plant is collected, cleaned, and dried for use. The root rhizomes and stems are commonly used in herbal remedies.
Botanical features: Stems are cylindrical or slightly flattened, 10–30 cm long, 2–3 mm in diameter, with a brown-red surface marked by fine vertical lines and leaf scars. The cross-section shows a reddish-brown outer layer with white pulp inside. Leaves are alternate, often appearing in pairs or groups of 3–4 at the top of the stem. They are elliptical in shape, measuring 3–7 cm in length and 1.5–3 cm in width. Young leaves have glandular hairs, while older ones are gray-green or brownish. The leaves are nearly leathery, with serrated edges and prominent veins. Stems may sometimes bear dark red, spherical fruits. The plant has a faintly fragrant aroma and a slightly astringent taste. Best quality is achieved from thick rhizomes with green, undamaged leaves.
Taste and function: Bitter and cooling. It helps relieve coughs, expel phlegm, promote blood circulation, act as a diuretic, and detoxify the body. Used to treat chronic bronchitis, tuberculosis, hemoptysis, hematemesis, trauma, joint pain, hepatitis, dysentery, nephritis, hypertension, and digestive issues. Dosage is typically 9–12 grams, taken orally with honey or wolfberry juice. Can also be applied externally.
Note: The root is known as "Zijin" in traditional Chinese medicine. It is used for detoxification and treating cold abdominal pain. Decoction is common, with a typical dose of 9–12 grams.
