Gushing Lotus in Golden Lotus

Aliases: Dioscorea henryi, Lai Lian Di Hen Bao Lan Orchid

Family & Genus: Musaceae

Species: Perennial fleshy succulent herb

Origin: Native to the dry and hot valley of the Jinsha River in northwestern Yunnan, China. This wild plant is not only abundant in quantity but also widely distributed across the region. It is a unique and highly valued wild flower in Yunnan, often regarded as an ornamental gem.

In recent years, through artificial transplantation, it has been introduced into urban greening projects in Kunming, where it is increasingly appreciated for its beauty and adaptability.

Morphological Characteristics: The burrowing lotus is a dwarf plant, typically reaching a height of about 1 meter. Its above-ground part resembles a pseudo-stem, with thickened leaves similar in appearance to those of plantain. The leaves are green and glossy.

The inflorescence is composed of dense layers of golden-yellow sepals stacked at the top of the pseudo-stem. These sepals gradually open upward, revealing delicate, fragrant white flowers inside. The flowering period is long, lasting more than two months.

This species tends to grow in dense patches. After blooming, it produces long, lush leaves. When in full bloom, it looks like a golden lotus emerging from the ground, creating a stunning and dramatic landscape.

Ecological Habits: It thrives in warm environments and is not frost-tolerant. In colder regions, it should be cultivated indoors or in greenhouses. It requires ample sunlight and does not tolerate shade. During summer, it prefers moist conditions, while winter and spring call for slightly drier soil. It grows best in well-drained, fertile, loose loam soil.

Propagation is mainly done through rhizomes, though it can also be grown from seeds. The gushing lotus is adaptable, drought-tolerant, and easy to cultivate. However, it performs best in loose, well-drained soil with good light and a warm, humid climate. If winter temperatures do not drop below -3°C, it can survive the season. Severe frost may damage the above-ground foliage, reducing its ornamental value.

Use Characteristics: This plant is highly versatile in landscaping. It can be planted alone on rockeries, used to line small streams, or featured in flower beds and potted arrangements. It is ideal for planting in front of windows, along walls, or in decorative rock gardens.

The stem sap can be consumed, and the flowers have medicinal properties, acting as an astringent to stop bleeding. Its combination of beauty, resilience, and utility makes it a valuable addition to both gardens and traditional herbal practices.
