Pond rear crab management

To ensure optimal growth and health of disease-resistant river crabs, a balanced and diverse feeding strategy is essential. The feed should consist of a mix of fine and coarse particles, combining both animal and plant-based sources. Animal feedstuffs such as small Fish (Shrimp), snail meat, cockroach and clam flesh, organ meats, silkworm pupae, and fishmeal make up over 70% of the total diet, while vegetable feeds like soybean cake, wheat, fruits, and corn provide necessary fiber and nutrients. Additionally, high-protein commercial pellets with more than 40% crude protein can be used as a supplement. All feed materials should be chopped into small pieces and distributed evenly in shallow water areas covered with aquatic plants to encourage natural feeding behavior. The daily feeding amount should be 5–8% of the total Crab biomass, divided into two meals per day. It's recommended that the evening meal account for about 70% of the daily ration to support nighttime activity. Any leftover food must be removed promptly to prevent water pollution and maintain good pond conditions. Water quality management is crucial during the later stages of cultivation. The pond depth should be maintained at 1.5 meters or more, with water clarity above 30 cm. Water should be changed every 7–10 days, and the water level kept stable to prevent crabs from escaping or forming burrows. Every 15 days, 15 grams of lime per square meter should be scattered throughout the pond to increase calcium levels, which is vital for crabs during their molting phase from yellow to green crabs. A stable coverage of aquatic plants, around 50%, helps provide shelter, oxygen, and a natural environment for the crabs. Common diseases affecting disease-resistant river crabs include ciliate disease, black gill disease, and shell disease. To prevent these, it is advisable to treat the water with 0.5 mg of strong chlorine per liter every 7–10 days, along with adding antibiotics like terramycin and dehulling agents to the feed. If ciliate disease is detected, 0.75 kg of carapace net per acre can be sprayed to reduce the infestation. Dead crabs should be immediately removed, the cause identified, and appropriate medication administered. Deep burial of dead crabs is essential to prevent disease spread. Predators such as water rats, frogs, and snakes should be eliminated promptly to protect the crabs. When water temperatures drop below 10°C, crabs should be harvested quickly to avoid them burrowing into the mud. Methods such as traps, light attraction, and netting can be used. Once most crabs are caught, the pond can be drained, and the remaining crabs collected using nets. This ensures efficient and safe harvesting.
