Morphological Characteristics:
This epiphytic orchid, known as Paphiopedilum paphiopedilum, is native to Yunnan and Guizhou provinces in China. It features 5 to 8 leaves that are green on the front and lighter on the back, with few visible grid-like spots. The plant has a tall, slender calyx ranging from 30 to 60 cm in height, covered in dense white hair. Its flowers, usually 4 to 8 per stem, have banded petals with a wavy base.
Flowering typically occurs between June and July, making it a unique and relatively easy-to-cultivate species within the Paphiopedilum genus. Each stem produces three or four flowers, and the plant tends to be more robust compared to other varieties. The side lobes are long and narrow, resembling twisted bamboo leaves. When in bloom, the flower looks as if two silk strips are fluttering along the edge of a fragrant blossom, giving rise to its name.
The background of the flower is predominantly white, with the main lobe and side lobes featuring thin, pale cyan lines. The side lobes also show a subtle purplish-red accent. The "pocket" at the base of the flower is very pale mauve with distinct stripes. The leaves are thick, fleshy, wide, and long, but they do not have a blue tint. The flowering period is notably long, often lasting up to a month.

This orchid is primarily found in the Wenshan area of Yunnan and neighboring regions.
Growth Habits:
It thrives in well-ventilated areas with plenty of light, so it should not be placed in shaded locations. For optimal growth, it's best to use materials like snail sticks (awn) for planting. During summer, a layer of warm water moss can be added to help maintain moisture. Water only when the surface of the medium dries out, and avoid using concentrated fertilizers.
Care Tips:
Paphiopedilum prefers bright, indirect light rather than direct sunlight. Exposure to intense sun may cause brown spots and yellowing of older leaves. After watering or fertilizing, it's important to keep the plant in a well-ventilated area to allow the leaves to dry quickly and prevent water or fertilizer burn.

Most Paphiopedilum species are not fragrant, but one rare variety from Malipo, Guangxi, emits a strong scent, especially at night. This particular type is known as "Pangasius," and it stands out due to its long, elegant flower stems. It can bloom for up to two months without fading.
The flowers of this orchid are generally large, with the main and side lobes displaying a greenish-blue coloration and the side lobes showing a brownish-red netted pattern. It typically blooms during winter and spring, making it a popular choice during the Chinese New Year season and continuing through the Qingming Festival.
If you notice a shortened flowering period, it could be due to over-fertilization during blooming or when buds are forming, excessive moisture, or exposure to direct sunlight while in bloom. Proper care and attention can help extend its beautiful display.
