Leggy seedlings are characterized by thin, weak stems, elongated internodes, narrow and pale leaves. This condition is typically caused by excessive heat and humidity within the greenhouse. To prevent this, first, ensure proper ventilation based on the seedlings' temperature and humidity needs. Second, keep the cover clean to maximize light exposure and extend the duration of light. Third, avoid overcrowding the seedlings to provide sufficient nutrients and space for healthy growth.
Aging seedlings are usually small in size, with short stems, poor root regeneration ability, and thick, dark green leaves. This issue often occurs when seedlings are left too long before transplanting. To manage it, strictly control the seedling age and maintain optimal moisture levels. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to weakened growth and reduced vitality.
Root problems occur when no new or adventitious roots develop, and the root bark turns brown and begins to rot, leading to yellowing and wilting of the plants. To address this, first, select a well-drained and fertile site for the seedbed and raise the ground temperature if necessary. Second, apply a diluted solution of Tianda 2116 (200–500 times) combined with a root-promoting agent. Third, maintain daytime temperatures between 20°C and 25°C and nighttime temperatures around 15°C to create an ideal growing environment.
In some cases, the seed coats fail to split properly, preventing the cotyledons from opening. This can hinder photosynthesis and result in weak, underdeveloped seedlings. To prevent this, apply organic fertilizer and water the base thoroughly after sowing, ensuring the soil is covered appropriately. Additionally, use mulch, such as plastic film or straw mats, to protect the seedlings and promote even germination.
