Livestock and poultry management measures during rainy season

Livestock and poultry farms should be located on elevated, flat ground and avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding, such as valleys. This helps prevent water accumulation and reduces the risk of disease transmission due to standing water. After heavy rains, it's essential to drain any pooled water promptly. Clean and disinfect areas or equipment that have been submerged, open windows and doors for proper ventilation, and ensure the farm remains dry to prevent the spread of pathogens. Moisture control is also critical to maintain a healthy environment.
Access to the production area should be strictly controlled. Foreign vehicles and personnel are not allowed to enter unless absolutely necessary. If they must, all vehicles should undergo thorough disinfection before entry. Additionally, the movement of staff should be monitored, and no other animals should be permitted in the farm area to reduce the risk of disease introduction.
Regular disinfection is crucial. A 3% to 5% solution of fire bleach can be sprayed on the ground weekly. Waste should be removed regularly and sterilized using 5% bleach, 3% formalin, or peracetic acid. Equipment such as feeding troughs and water basins must be cleaned and disinfected frequently to maintain hygiene and prevent contamination.
Mosquitoes and rodents pose a significant threat to livestock health. Bites from mosquitoes can transmit infectious diseases, so it's important to remove weeds around the farm. In early summer, install mosquito nets on doors and windows to keep out pests and wild birds. Insecticides can be added to feed, and insecticides can be sprayed in high-mosquito areas. For example, administering vitamin B1 (30–40 mg every three days) can help repel mosquitoes naturally. Crushing tomato leaves or mint leaves and applying the juice to pigs also acts as an effective, non-harmful repellent.
Different species require tailored preventive measures. After rain, temperatures may rise quickly, leading to heat stress in animals, which can trigger bacterial infections or outbreaks. Implement cooling strategies such as shade, fans, or misting systems to protect livestock from heat-related illnesses.
Proper feeding practices are essential for maintaining animal health. Provide high-quality feed rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals. Ensure clean and sufficient drinking water is always available, and avoid feeding moldy or contaminated feed to prevent illness. A well-balanced diet strengthens the immune system and supports overall productivity.
