Green leaves velvet (Figure)

The green velvet, also known as *Litchi* or *Araceae*, is a striking perennial herb with velvety, grass-like leaves. Its foliage is dark green, glossy, and has a distinctive violin-shaped form—narrow in the middle and broader at the base. The plant produces white inflorescences and originates from Brazil, where it has gained popularity as a decorative potted plant. It's widely used in interior design for living rooms, dens, and bedrooms due to its elegant appearance. For optimal growth, use a soil mix of 2 parts potting soil, 2 parts leaf mold, and 1 part coarse river sand. Add a small amount of well-decomposed manure after disinfecting it, and ensure the pot has drainage holes. A layer of broken pottery should be placed at the bottom for better drainage. When planting, insert a brown tube in the center to help the roots cling and grow properly. Velvet plants thrive in bright, indirect light but are sensitive to direct sunlight, which can cause leaf burn. During spring, summer, and autumn, place it in a well-lit room with diffused light. In winter, position it near a south-facing window to receive adequate light. The ideal temperature range is above 10°C, as prolonged exposure to cold can lead to frost damage, wilting, and even plant death. Watering should be done every 4–5 days during spring and autumn, and daily in summer. Mist the leaves and surrounding area during hot weather to maintain humidity and cool the environment. In winter, reduce watering and keep the soil slightly moist—overwatering can lead to root rot. Poor ventilation may invite pests like scale insects. If infestations are minor, remove them manually. For more severe cases, spray a 40% omethoate emulsifiable concentrate diluted to 1,000 times, and apply it to the roots for effective pest control. Propagation is typically done through stem cuttings. From May to September, take cuttings from thick stems that include 2–4 nodes, and plant them in sterilized sandy soil. Keep the pot in a shaded area and maintain consistent moisture. Roots usually develop within about 40 days, making this an easy and reliable method for growing new plants.
