Green leaves velvet (Figure)

The velvet plant, also known as *Litchi* or *Araceae*, is a lush, green perennial that belongs to the Araceae family. It's a herbaceous plant with grass-like leaves that are narrow in the middle, broad at the base, and shaped like a violin. The leaves are dark green, glossy, and have a soft, velvety texture. Its inflorescence is white, adding a delicate touch to its appearance. Native to Brazil, this plant has become a popular choice for indoor decoration, often used in living rooms, dens, and bedrooms due to its attractive foliage. For optimal growth, use a potting mix composed of 2 parts garden soil, 2 parts leaf mold, and 1 part coarse river sand. Before planting, it's essential to disinfect the soil and add a small amount of well-decomposed cattle or horse manure to enrich the nutrients. Use broken pots as a drainage layer at the bottom of the container, and place a brown tube in the center to help the roots grow straight and strong. Velvet plants thrive in bright, indirect light. During spring, summer, and autumn, they can be placed in a well-lit room. In winter, position them near a south-facing window to ensure they receive enough light. These plants prefer warm conditions, and indoor temperatures should not drop below 10°C during the colder months. Prolonged exposure to cold can cause leaf damage, wilting, and even death. Watering should be done carefully. In spring and autumn, water once every 4 to 5 days, ensuring the soil stays moist but not soggy. In summer, water daily and mist the leaves and pot to maintain humidity and cool the environment. However, in winter, watering must be strictly controlled—only water when the soil begins to dry out. Overwatering can lead to root rot, which is fatal for the plant. Poor ventilation can make the velvet plant vulnerable to pests such as scale insects. If the infestation is small, manually remove the pests. For larger infestations, spray a solution of 40% omethoate EC diluted 1000 times, and apply it directly to the roots for effective pest control. Propagation is typically done through stem cuttings. From May to September, take 2–4 node cuttings from thick stems, and plant them in sterilized sandy soil. Place the container in a shaded area and keep the soil consistently moist. Roots usually develop within about 40 days, making this a reliable and efficient method of propagation.
