Treatment of ruminal gasification of cows with tobacco soda

On June 18, 2005, a case of rumen expansion was reported in a black-and-white bull belonging to the Limou family in Erdaowan Village, Jingouhe Town, Shawan County. The animal, about 2.5 years old and weighing approximately 280 kilograms, showed clear signs of distress. It had stopped ruminating, refused to eat or drink, and exhibited restlessness, sweating, and frequent attempts to look back at its abdomen. Breathing was labored, and the body felt cold. A white foam was visible around the mouth, and the tongue was extended. Upon examination, the left side of the abdomen was distended, and percussion revealed drum-like sounds. When pressure was applied to the abdominal wall, it felt firm and lacked elasticity. No normal rumen sounds were heard; instead, a metallic tone was present. The heart rate was elevated, ranging from 70 to 98 beats per minute, and the pulse was rapid. The mucous membranes were pale, and the eyeballs appeared sunken. To prevent further complications, the affected animal was placed on a 50 cm thick layer of wheat straw to avoid suffocation due to lying in a hard area. For treatment, a stomach tube was inserted to remove approximately 3 kg of foam and gas from the stomach. A mixture of 50 grams of dried tobacco leaf powder, 200 grams of baking soda, and 3 liters of warm water was administered through the tube. Within 90 minutes, the abdominal swelling had completely subsided. In addition, an intravenous infusion was given, consisting of 10 ml of 10% sodium chloride, 500 ml of 10% glucose, and 20 ml of 20% procaine. By the next day, the animal's heart rate, breathing, and rumen motility had returned to normal. The bull began to chew cud again and resumed eating and drinking. Within a few days, the condition improved significantly, and the animal fully recovered. Rumen gaseous distension is a common and serious condition in cattle, particularly during spring and autumn. Prompt treatment is essential to prevent death. This method proved effective, with a good recovery rate and low cost, making it a practical solution for farmers.
