Seven Methods for Controlling Tianniu

To effectively manage the infestation of tree pests, especially those that lay eggs on tree trunks, several practical and environmentally friendly methods can be applied. First, applying a whitening agent made with 50% phoxim and lime at a height of 2 meters from the base of the trunk before the bees emerge can significantly reduce adult emergence. This treatment also helps to prevent the hatching of eggs into larvae, offering a dual layer of protection. Second, during the egg-laying season, it's recommended to manually remove the eggs by gently hammering them off the trunk. This is particularly effective in orchards and poplar tree areas where these pests are commonly found. Third, scraping the eggs or early-stage larvae from the trunk should be done between June and July. If any eggs or larvae are detected on the rough bark surface within 2 meters of the trunk base, they can be carefully scraped off using a knife. After scraping, the area should be painted with a lime sulfur mixture to further deter future infestations. Fourth, for wormholes that show signs of larval activity—such as the presence of frass and wood shavings—a wire can be inserted into the hole to kill the larvae directly. Fifth, injecting a solution of 40% omethoate diluted 100 times into the wormhole, followed by sealing the hole with mud, can suffocate and kill the larvae inside. This method is both efficient and cost-effective. Sixth, manual collection of adult pests is feasible since they are large, slow-moving, and have limited flying ability. People can be encouraged to collect and destroy them, especially during the day when they are more active. Lastly, spraying insecticides during the adult eclosion period is an important step. A mixture of 20% emulsifiable concentrate (200-fold dilution) and 40% dimethoate emulsion (300-fold dilution) can be used to effectively control adult populations. This should be done in the early morning or late evening when the pests are most active. These integrated pest management techniques not only help protect trees from damage but also promote a healthier ecosystem by reducing chemical reliance and encouraging natural control methods.
