Rabbit Breeding Techniques
Rex Rabbit, also known as the Lexus Rabbit, is a unique breed originally from France. Its fur closely resembles that of a luxurious animal, which is why it's often called the Rex Rabbit. Not only is its meat rich in protein and low in fat, but it's also known for being delicious, easy to digest, and beneficial for beauty, anti-aging, fitness, and mental well-being. As a rare health food, it's gaining popularity among health-conscious consumers.
The demand for Rex Rabbit fur has increased significantly, especially when rabbit hair and meat were not selling well. According to export data from provinces like Shandong, Zhejiang, and Jilin, the price of each rabbit skin ranges between $3 and $5, while a domestic leather garment can cost between 600 and 800 yuan, making it a highly sought-after product. Additionally, Rex rabbits are herbivores with fast reproduction cycles. A single female can give birth to 6–7 offspring per year, and with proper care, raising 30 rabbits weighing just 2.5 kg can generate around 25 yuan each, totaling 750 yuan. If a family raises 10 groups (10 males and 20 females), annual income could reach 15,000 yuan, with a net profit of over 10,000 yuan after expenses.
Rex rabbits are easily distinguished by their fur, which is short, fine, dense, flat, and glossy. Their hair length is typically 1.6 to 2.2 cm, with very fine fibers and minimal coarse guard hairs. The fur is dense, soft, and retains heat effectively. Available in various colors such as black, white, brown, and coffee, Rex rabbits are both visually appealing and functional.
When it comes to feeding, Rex rabbits can eat wild grasses, leaves, and leguminous crops like soybean stalks, peanut shells, and sweet potato vines. For adults, a daily diet usually includes 800–1,000 grams of green feed and 100–150 grams of concentrate feed. A typical concentrate formula consists of 40% corn, 20% bran, 20% bean cake, 5% rice bran, 5% barley or sorghum, 5% fish meal, 3% bone meal, 1% salt, and 1% additives.
Proper management is key to successful breeding. Male rabbits should be given extra protein and vitamins A and E during mating season. If bred twice a day, their feed should increase by 25%. Each male should be paired with 2–5 females, and they should ideally mate with rabbits of the same color to maintain genetic purity. Female rabbits have a gestation period of 29–31 days. During this time, they need a quiet environment, clean feed, and reduced concentrate intake three days before birth. Prepare clean nesting materials, provide water with a bit of salt and sugar, and ensure they receive adequate nutrition post-birth to support milk production.
Young rabbits require special attention to prevent diseases and pests. Keep the hutch clean, avoid overheating, and introduce them to solid food at 18 days old. Wean them gradually between 30–45 days, and vaccinate them against Pasteurella at 45 days. Breeding can occur throughout the year, but spring offers the highest fertility rates. Males should be at least 5 months old and weigh 2.25 kg before breeding. In summer, breeding should happen early in the morning or late in the evening, while in winter, it should take place during midday. Natural mating is preferred, and nests should be properly prepared for optimal results.
Disease prevention is crucial, especially in damp seasons when coccidiosis is common. Adding garlic, onions, and leeks to the feed can help. Regular doses of chlorpheniramine and sulfamethazine are also recommended. If rabbits show symptoms of cold or pneumonia due to weather changes, antipyretic tablets or a combination of blue and streptomycin injections may be used. Keeping the environment clean and dry is essential to maintaining the health of the herd.
