(1) Feed: Breeding ostriches should be provided with a well-balanced diet that meets their specific nutritional requirements. The feed is typically formulated to meet the calcium and phosphorus needs of the species, especially during the laying period when females require higher levels of these minerals. Ostriches are also prone to deficiencies in fat-soluble vitamins and essential trace elements like iodine, iron, and zinc. However, it's important not to overfeed them with high-fat diets, as ostriches lack a gallbladder and have limited fat absorption capabilities. Excessive energy intake can lead to weight gain, which may result in reduced egg production or even a complete halt in laying. Therefore, managing energy intake is crucial for maintaining optimal reproductive performance.
(2) Feeding and Management Methods: Effective feeding and management practices are essential for maximizing egg production and ensuring the health of breeding ostriches. Male and female African ostriches can be housed together, but it's important to provide adequate space. Each bird should have a minimum of 10-12 square meters in the aviary, with a bird run area of about 250-300 square meters per pair. The layout of the run should ideally be in a 7:3 ratio to encourage natural movement and reduce stress. Waterers should be made of durable materials such as concrete or solid plastic to prevent damage from the birds' feet and to maintain hygiene.
It is recommended to feed ostriches four times a day, with the first feeding occurring between 6:30 and 7:30 AM. The interval between feedings should remain consistent. The feeding order should start with fine or mixed feed, followed by green coarse feed, with approximately 1.5 kg of food offered each time. Clean, fresh water should always be available, and in winter, warm water (around 25°C) is preferred to ensure proper hydration. To promote physical activity and mental stimulation, ostriches should be allowed at least 1-2 hours of free movement in the morning and afternoon. Regular cleaning of the aviary is necessary to maintain hygiene and remove waste from the runs. Additionally, waterers and equipment should be disinfected weekly to prevent disease outbreaks.
