The potted white orchid, especially when placed in the north, may look beautiful at first, but after several years of growth, the lower parts of its main and lateral branches often become bare and leafless. This unsightly condition is commonly referred to by gardeners as “off the pants.†To restore the plant’s appearance and promote healthier growth, a full pruning is necessary. The best time for this is during mid to late May.
Pruning at this stage encourages the growth of new buds and axillary buds, which helps to reshape the tree crown and prevent the old branches from growing unchecked. As a result, new foliage will sprout from the axillary buds, and the number of lateral branches can increase by 3 to 4 times. On a single original branch, 3 to 4 new lateral branches can develop, making the canopy appear fuller and more vibrant, while also increasing the number of flowering sites.
When performing this type of crown renewal, it's crucial to make the cut just above a lateral bud—ideally about 0.6 cm above the top bud. This prevents the formation of a "pile" or dead section that could hinder regrowth. Additionally, when selecting the buds to clip, always choose those that are growing on the outer side of the tree. This ensures that the new branches grow outward, maintaining a neat and balanced shape. If you prune inward-facing buds, the new growth may cross over, disrupting the overall structure of the plant.
After pruning, it's important to protect the cuts from drying out. One effective method is to cover the cut areas with a small piece of plastic film or apply a layer of pruning paint. This helps prevent dry rot and ensures that the new buds have the best chance to germinate and thrive. Taking these steps not only improves the health of the orchid but also enhances its visual appeal, making it a more attractive addition to any garden or indoor space.
