Aberdeen Divide "Trilogy"

From mid-June to early July each year, Aberdeen minks begin their journey toward independence, gradually leaving their mother and starting a life of "opening the door." This period is a crucial phase in their development, marking the transition from pups to mature animals. It's also a pivotal moment that determines the success of the breeding process. Based on years of experience, the author emphasizes that mastering the correct nesting strategy is essential to ensure a survival and health rate exceeding 95%.
First, timing is key. Normally, Aberdeen minks can start being separated into individual nests at around 50 to 60 days old. The separation should be done gradually, based on the condition of each litter. For well-balanced and healthy pups, it’s best to divide them into three or four groups initially—never all at once. If done too quickly, it may lead to a "hunger strike" or panic due to confusion or a sense of "returning" to the mother. For litters where some pups are smaller or weaker due to malnutrition or poor health, the larger and stronger ones should be separated first, while the weaker ones remain with their mother until they grow stronger and more resilient.
After the first nest division, wait 5 to 7 days before fully separating them and allowing them to live independently.
Second, managing food intake is critical. After weaning, the main shift is from milk to solid feed. However, the mother’s milk supply and the pups’ individual conditions vary, making it hard to determine the exact amount of food needed. But by following two simple rules, you can ensure proper nutrition during this vulnerable time. First, strictly control the amount of food given. After feeding, check if there is leftover food in the dish. If there is too much, reduce the portion immediately. Second, the food should be soft and not overly thick. After eating, the pups shouldn’t have a visibly full belly—each meal should not exceed 75 grams. Aim for a 5–6% fullness level.
During this stage, the feed mixture should also be prepared in small batches. A common ratio is 3:1:X—3 kg of corn flour, 1 kg of fishmeal, and the rest should be a mix of glucose, goat milk, and feed concentrate. Any added ingredients must be balanced by reducing the corn flour accordingly.
Third, disease prevention is essential. Once the minks are independent, around 10 to 15 days after separation, when their weight reaches about 2.0 kg, they should receive a vaccine. One week after vaccination, administer an anthelmintic, and deworm each one individually. Afterward, regular deworming every month, along with proper insect repellent use, can effectively prevent issues like self-biting, stunted growth, gray fur on the head and paws, and other health problems that can affect fur quality and production.
