Aberdeen Divide "Trilogy"

From mid-June to early July each year, Aberdeen minks begin a crucial life transition—leaving their mother and starting an independent life. This phase is vital for their growth from pups to mature animals and plays a decisive role in the success of breeding. Based on years of experience, mastering the right methods during this nesting period can ensure a survival and health rate exceeding 95%. First, timing is key. Normally, Aberdeen minks can start separating from their mother at around 50 to 60 days old. The process should be gradual, tailored to each litter's condition. For well-balanced, healthy litters, it’s best to divide them into three or four nests initially. Avoid sending one pup away immediately, as this may cause panic or even a “hunger strike” due to confusion. For litters with uneven sizes caused by malnutrition or poor health, separate the larger, stronger individuals first, while keeping the smaller, weaker ones with their mother until they grow stronger before allowing them to leave. After the initial separation, which lasts about 5 to 7 days, the young minks can be moved to individual cages and begin a truly independent life. Second, managing food intake is essential. After weaning, the main diet shifts from milk to solid feed. Due to differences in the mother’s milk supply and individual development, it’s hard to determine the exact amount of food needed. However, following two simple rules ensures proper nutrition during this critical period. First, strictly control the portion size. After feeding, check if any food remains in the dish. If too much is left, reduce the next portion; if none is left, consider increasing it slightly. Second, keep the food thin rather than thick. After eating, the mink should not have a visibly full belly (each meal should not exceed 75 grams), and the feeding level should stay between 5% to 6% of its body weight. The feed mixture during this time should also be carefully measured. A common ratio is 3:1:X—3 kg of corn flour, 1 kg of fishmeal, and the rest consisting of glucose, goat milk, and feed concentrate. When adding these ingredients, always adjust the corn flour accordingly. Third, disease prevention is crucial. Once the minks are independent, typically after 10 to 15 days and when their weight reaches about 2.0 kg, they should receive a timely vaccination. One week after vaccination, administer deworming medication. Each mink should be dewormed individually. After that, regular deworming every month, along with proper insect control, helps prevent issues like self-biting, stunted growth, gray fur on the head and paws, and other conditions that can affect fur quality or production.
