At the heart of every great hospital lies the vital need for safe and efficient blood storage. Blood, as we all know, is the foundation of life, and without it, our ability to function would be impossible. But managing blood storage is no small feat—it requires precision, regulation, and often significant resources. In fact, some hospitals dedicate entire buildings just to handle this critical process. For the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) in Rochester, New York, modernizing their blood storage capabilities became a necessity.
URMC is renowned as one of the nation's top teaching hospitals, known for its cutting-edge scientific research, comprehensive patient care, and strong community ties. Medical professionals here mentor residents while actively participating in their education, creating an environment rich with learning opportunities through research, innovation, and community engagement. Many of URMC’s specialized programs have consistently ranked among the best in the country, earning them high praise from sources like U.S. News & World Report.
Given such a prestigious reputation, when it came time to relocate URMC’s blood lab within the hospital premises, ensuring state-of-the-art facilities was paramount. Previously housed in a separate building, the blood lab needed to be updated with modern equipment and infrastructure. This involved replacing outdated food-service-grade walk-in units with advanced systems featuring reinforced stainless steel floors, internal ramps, redundant refrigeration setups, and sophisticated chart recorders for precise temperature monitoring.
However, one of the key challenges was devising a better way to store blood packets efficiently. Traditional wire shelving used in older labs made accessing packets at the back nearly impossible, leading to inefficiencies and potential risks. Recognizing this issue, IMC/Teddy stepped forward with a creative solution designed specifically for URMC.
Our collaboration began when Joe Wilson from J. Wilson Marketing introduced us to a well-known food service dealer who sought a custom "blood shelf"—a hybrid unit combining shelving with pull-out drawer functionality. These innovative shelves were meant to fit perfectly inside URMC’s newly constructed walk-ins. The sliding pan-type drawers addressed the challenge of retrieving hard-to-access items while preventing accidents caused by tipping units loaded with blood packets.
Moreover, we implemented “no-tip†reinforcement brackets to ensure stability and prevent accidents. This project highlighted our expertise in crafting fully customized designs—a hallmark of IMC/Teddy’s work.
Ultimately, we delivered seventeen units meeting these exacting standards:
- Constructed from 18-gauge Type 300 series stainless steel.
- Equipped with sliding pan-type shelves spaced 12"/12½" apart, supported by cross bracing.
- Mounted on legs fitted with casters (two with brakes).
- Enhanced with “no-tip†reinforcement brackets.
- Sized at 24½â€D x 51½â€W x 74â€H.
These custom blood shelves now stand proudly in URMC’s modernized blood lab, ensuring smooth operations and enhanced safety for staff. As of August 2020, URMC officially launched its upgraded blood lab featuring our shelves, marking another successful milestone in healthcare technology.
