In recent years, as the scale of mulberry cultivation has expanded, the number of pests affecting mulberry trees has been on the rise. Among them, lepidopteran pests have become particularly problematic, causing significant damage and becoming a major threat to summer and autumn harvests. According to field surveys, four key factors contribute to the increasing pest problem.
First, environmental conditions are favorable for pest development. In misty weather, the hatching rate of mulberry eggs can reach up to 100%, whereas in dry conditions, it drops to 50% or even less. Additionally, the past few years of warmer winters have greatly increased the survival rate of overwintering pests, allowing them to thrive and multiply more quickly.
Second, some mulberry fields lack proper management. Many farmers who engage in silkworm rearing tend to prioritize their silk production over field maintenance. As a result, practices such as weeding, pest control, and timely spraying are often neglected. Some households fail to monitor pests effectively or even ignore them, leading to severe infestations in certain areas.
Third, improper pesticide use is a major issue. If farmers follow the guidelines provided by the sericulture sector, pest control should be straightforward. However, many do not adhere to uniform application methods, timing, or concentration levels. Instead, they mix multiple pesticides together, which accelerates the development of resistance in pests and reduces the effectiveness of treatment. When they try to increase the dosage, it creates a harmful cycle that worsens the problem.
Fourth, incorrect timing of pesticide application is another critical factor. Some farmers fail to detect young larvae early enough and only act when damage becomes visible, missing the optimal window for intervention. For example, effective control of mulberry pests should occur during the egg-hatching stage. If treatment begins after the third instar stage, the results are significantly reduced. Moreover, some farmers use the same type of pesticide year-round, further contributing to rapid pest resistance.
To effectively manage mulberry pests, especially during the silkworm-rearing season, targeted pesticide use is essential to ensure the safety of silkworms. Control measures should be based on the specific characteristics of pest outbreaks and the sensitivity of silkworms to chemicals. Each pest control operation should use a single pesticide, and different types should be alternated to prevent resistance. The concentration should be moderate, and careful attention must be paid to the spraying process.
Survey findings also reveal that while some farmers purchase standard pesticides like dichlorvos and phoxim from authorized agricultural suppliers, there are concerns about the quality of some products. Certain manufacturers may add unknown ingredients to enhance broad-spectrum efficiency, which can be harmful to silkworms and lead to poisoning incidents.
Currently, there are specialized mulberry pesticides suitable for sericulture, such as 40% Sangbao emulsifiable concentrate and green-plant emulsifiable concentrate. These are highly toxic but systemic insecticides that effectively target lepidopteran and homopteran pests. They work through both stomach and contact toxicity. Their low cost (4 machines per mu), ease of use, and strong safety profile make them an ideal choice for farmers seeking effective and secure pest control.
