Rape is a biodiesel seed developer

In response to the growing energy crisis, biodiesel has emerged as a promising, eco-friendly, and renewable alternative to petroleum. Researchers from the Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences, including Qi Cunjian, have emphasized that rapeseed is the most suitable raw material for biodiesel production in the province. Qi actively advocates for the use of rapeseed to promote the sustainable development of the biodiesel industry in Jiangsu. Qi Chukou, a deputy researcher, highlighted that Jiangsu is a major energy consumer but also a region with limited natural resources. With annual diesel consumption reaching approximately 8 million tons, around 80% of which is imported, developing biodiesel is crucial for addressing energy shortages and enhancing energy security. According to current industry trends, the key challenge today is not the conversion of raw materials into biodiesel, but securing large quantities of stable and cost-effective feedstock. From a research perspective, Ji Cunkou noted that several oil crops—such as soybeans, peanuts, seashore mallow, and rapeseed—are suitable for biodiesel production. However, soybeans and peanuts are autumn-maturing crops that compete with rice, the main staple crop in Jiangsu, raising concerns about food security. Therefore, large-scale cultivation of these crops is not advisable. Seashore mallow, while viable, has a much lower yield compared to rapeseed, which produces about 200 kilograms per mu, significantly more than seashore mallow's 30 kilograms per acre. Rapeseed, on the other hand, is a summer-maturing plant that does not interfere with grain production, especially wheat. It also helps improve soil fertility and can increase the yield of subsequent rice crops by up to 15%. Additionally, rapeseed can utilize the vast amount of winter idle farmland—around 2 million mu—across the province. These factors make rapeseed the most ideal choice for biodiesel development in Jiangsu. Qi Cunjian also stressed the importance of careful planning and rational distribution when establishing biodiesel projects. He emphasized that processing capacity must align with raw material supply to avoid overcapacity. Government support should focus on tax incentives and direct subsidies for end-users to ensure the industry develops in a healthy and sustainable manner.
