Case Study: University of Rochester –Strong Memorial Hospital – A New Way to Store Blood

Blood is the foundation of life, and without it, functioning would be impossible. However, storing blood is no small task—it's a complex and highly regulated process that often requires significant resources, sometimes even entire buildings dedicated solely to the purpose. For the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), updating their blood storage facilities was essential.
URMC, located in Rochester, New York, is renowned as one of America’s best teaching hospitals. It combines cutting-edge scientific research with exceptional patient care and strong community ties. Medical professionals here guide residents while fostering an environment rich in education, innovation, and discovery. Many of URMC’s specialty programs have consistently ranked among the nation’s finest, earning top honors in national rankings.
Given URMC’s stature, it was important that any upgrades align with its high standards. Previously, the blood lab operated from a separate building. Following careful consideration, it was decided to relocate the lab within the main hospital structure. This meant purchasing and installing all-new equipment to meet modern requirements.
The older blood lab used standard food-grade walk-in coolers equipped with basic refrigeration systems and external ramps. In contrast, the new setup includes reinforced stainless steel flooring, internal ramps, redundant cooling systems, and advanced temperature loggers. But what about storing the blood packets themselves? The existing walk-ins relied on traditional wire shelving. While common in many hospitals, this setup had one major drawback—accessing packets at the back of the shelves was cumbersome. Here’s how the previous shelving looked:

At IMC/Teddy, we were eager to develop a solution that would simplify daily operations for URMC staff. Our representative, Joe Wilson from J. Wilson Marketing, connected us with a well-known food service dealer to create a "blood shelf"—a hybrid unit combining shelving and racks with pull-out drawers. These units would fit perfectly inside the new walk-ins.
The sliding drawer design addressed the challenge of reaching packets tucked away in the rear sections of the shelves. Additionally, the risk of entire shelving units tipping over posed safety concerns. To mitigate this, we engineered "no-tip" brackets with added reinforcements to ensure stability.
This project was uniquely tailored, requiring a 100% custom design—a task IMC/Teddy excels at. We delivered seventeen blood shelves with the following specifications:
- Constructed from 18-gauge Type 300 series stainless steel.
- Sliding pan-type shelves spaced 12"/12½" apart, with cross-bracing.
- Legs fitted with two casters (with brakes).
- "No-tip" reinforcement brackets.
- Dimensions: 24½"D x 51½"W x 74"H.
