Prevention of explosive root cancer, "Cube" emergency attack
Experts have issued a warning that the incidence of root cancer disease in fruit trees has significantly increased this spring, urging immediate action to prevent an outbreak.
Benwang News: At a recent seminar on the prevention and treatment of root cancer in fruit trees held in Dalian, Liu Fujing, a member of the World Expert Group on Science, Education, Culture, and Health, raised concerns about the growing threat. According to experts, various factors contributing to the spread of root cancer caused by plant diseases have led to a sharp rise in cases this spring. This calls for urgent measures to control the situation before it escalates further.
This year’s unusually warm winter, which has not been seen in decades, has created favorable conditions for pests. Underground insect infestations are expected to cause more damage to fruit tree roots than in previous years. These injuries create entry points for *Agrobacterium tumefaciens*, the bacteria responsible for root cancer. Moreover, a sudden cold snap hit more than half of China after the warm period, causing early-sprouting fruit trees to suffer from both wind and frost damage. As a result, their natural resistance to disease has been severely weakened.
Root cancer has been a persistent problem over the past few decades, affecting at least 93 plant families, 331 genera, and 643 species. Despite efforts, no ideal treatment or preventive method has been found. Traditional chemical pesticides have proven ineffective, often leading to residue issues, resistance, and even harm to plant roots, sometimes resulting in rot and plant death. Biocontrol agents like K84 can only prevent infections and are sensitive to environmental changes, making them less effective under certain conditions. Therefore, the current situation is extremely concerning.
However, there is some encouraging news. A high-tech research unit in Dalian has developed several innovative products, including "Magic Formula No. 5" seaweed extract, "Magic Formula No. 6" chitosan oligosaccharide citrate callus, and "Magic Formula No. 7" carboxymethyl chitosan protectant. These products are now in mass production. As of press time, 26 provinces and regions across China have placed urgent orders with the company, which is working around the clock to distribute the products nationwide. Despite limited resources, the development brings hope to farmers facing the growing threat of root cancer.
