Fishing gear maintenance and storage

Proper use and maintenance of fishing gear play a crucial role in extending the lifespan of the equipment, lowering operational costs, and ultimately boosting the overall profitability of fisheries. Whether during active use or after a temporary stop, it's essential to clean the gear thoroughly. If debris remains on the netting, it can cause uneven stress and lead to tearing during operation. Before storing, all nets should be cleaned of dirt, fish residue, and other contaminants. They should then be dried completely, and components like floats and sinkers should be removed and stored separately. Hooks must be brushed clean, sharpened, and coated with anti-rust oil before being placed in a dry storage area.
Fishing gear should be stored in well-ventilated spaces that receive adequate sunlight. For smaller items, they can be tied and hung from beams, while larger equipment should be kept in a high, well-ventilated warehouse. Regular checks of the storage area are necessary. On dry, sunny days, opening doors and windows allows for better air circulation, but during heavy rain or extreme heat, it’s best to keep them closed. During the rainy season or hot summer months, plant-based materials used in nets are more prone to mold. If mold appears, the gear should be exposed to sunlight and treated with fungicides if needed. Insect control and rodent prevention are also important aspects of warehouse management.
Although synthetic fibers offer better resistance to corrosion compared to natural fibers, materials like acrylics and polyamides can still develop mold when exposed to high humidity or temperature over time, which may weaken their structure. Therefore, even synthetic fishing gear requires proper ventilation and drying. Most synthetic fibers are not highly resistant to sunlight, so prolonged exposure should be avoided. Additionally, some synthetic mesh should not be folded excessively or bent sharply, as this can compromise the strength of the material and reduce its service life. By following these care practices, fishermen can ensure their gear remains functional and cost-effective for years to come.
