Feeding beef cattle

In order to establish a high-yield, low-loss, and highly-efficient cattle-raising industry, it's essential to move away from traditional feeding practices that are inefficient during summer and autumn, and face challenges in winter and spring due to drought. By fully utilizing available resources, implementing scientific feeding and management techniques, and actively adopting new, high-efficiency models such as "mixed cattle with forage grass," we can significantly improve productivity and sustainability.
1. **Select Hybrid Cattle**: Hybrid cattle combine the best traits of different breeds, showing strong heterosis and producing high-quality beef quickly. If hybrids aren't available, consider short-term fattening of local yaks aged 3 to 8 years, weighing around 250 kg, ensuring they are healthy and free from disease.
2. **Feed Ammoniated Grass**: The preparation involves mixing 100 kg of grass, 3 kg of urea, and 40 liters of water, then sealing it in an ammoniating chamber. Before introducing this feed, allow a 7–10 day transition period. Normally, cattle should eat about 2% of their body weight daily, and feeding should be done in three portions to avoid waste.
3. **Prepare Feed Mixtures**: A recommended formula includes 60% corn, 37% vegetable or cottonseed cake, 2% starch, 1% salt, and optionally soybean meal if cakes are unavailable. This helps reduce feeding costs. Feed should be given at 1% of body weight, twice a day.
4. **Use Feed Additives**: Embracing science and technology is key to boosting the beef industry and improving profitability. One common practice is the use of growth implants, which enhance meat production and improve feed efficiency. These can be administered every 100 days for long-term feeding, leading to better results.
5. **Implement Precision Feeding and Management**: During the transition to ammoniated forage, administer 30 mg of albendazole per kg of body weight to prevent parasites. After feeding, provide stomach tonics if needed. During the grazing season, allow 1–2 months of pasture time. In the later stages, ensure at least one month of confinement with high-energy diets, which typically takes 60–90 days for optimal fattening. When preparing mixed feed, soak wet ingredients for an hour before combining with dry forage. Always provide clean water twice daily. Maintain clean, dry, and well-ventilated barns to promote health and efficiency.
