Australian freshwater fish, commonly known as "garnet fish" or "gems," are highly valued for their striking appearance, gentle nature, and excellent taste. In recent years, China has started aquaculture of these fish, driven by their high market demand and economic potential. These fish grow quickly, have strong disease resistance, and are easy to raise, making them a promising option for farmers. Currently, the market price of commercial gems ranges from 80 to 90 yuan per kilogram, but supply still cannot meet demand. The aquaculture efficiency is 5 to 6 times higher than that of traditional fish species, offering significant profit opportunities. Below are the detailed methods for breeding gem fish, including seedling production and cultivation techniques.
Choose a pond with an area of 1.5 to 3 mu (approximately 1,000 to 2,000 square meters) and a water depth of 1.5 meters. The water should be clean, unpolluted, with a pH between 6.8 and 7.5, and dissolved oxygen levels above 4.5 mg/L. Two weeks before stocking, dry the pond thoroughly. One week before introducing the fish, apply 350 kg of organic fertilizer per acre, then fill the pond with 0.6 meters of water. A few days later, when the population of clams, copepods, rotifers, and other microorganisms peaks, it's the ideal time to release the fry. Usually, this happens when the water temperature reaches 20°C or higher, typically in mid to late May. The fry size is around 2.5 cm long. Before stocking, dip the fry in a 5% saltwater solution for 10 minutes to disinfect them, then transfer them into the culture pond. It's recommended to stock 2,500 to 3,000 fry per acre.
After stocking, keep the water shallow to increase the density of natural food in the pond, which helps the fry feed more efficiently. At the same time, shallow water can help raise the temperature, promoting faster growth. As the fry grow rapidly, gradually deepen the water to 1.5 meters after 14 days. Change 1/5 to 1/6 of the pond water every 7 days. Conduct three daily checks—morning, afternoon, and evening—to monitor feeding behavior, activity levels, and water quality. Use a water pump to aerate the pond for 1.5 hours between 1 and 2 PM. Regularly test dissolved oxygen and pH levels to adjust feeding and prevent diseases effectively. According to practical experience, after 30 days of careful management, the fish can reach a length of about 9.5 cm. At this point, they should be harvested and transferred to adult fish culture tanks for further growth.
