Feeding beef cattle

In order to establish a high-yield, low-loss, and highly-efficient cattle-raising industry, it's essential to move away from traditional feeding practices that rely on seasonal availability of feed. Instead, we should fully utilize available resources, implement scientific feeding and management techniques, and adopt innovative models such as the "mixed cattle with forage grass" system to boost productivity.
First, selecting hybrid cattle is crucial. These animals combine the best traits from different breeds, showing strong heterosis, which allows them to produce high-quality beef in a shorter time. If hybrids are not available, consider using local yaks aged between 3 to 8 years, weighing around 250 kg, and ensure they are healthy and free from diseases.
Second, ammoniated grass can be an effective supplement. The preparation involves mixing 100 kg of grass with 3 kg of urea and 40 liters of water, then sealing it in an airtight chamber. Before introducing this feed to cattle, allow a transition period of 7 to 10 days. Normally, cattle consume about 2% of their body weight in feed daily, and it's best to feed them three times a day without waste.
Third, preparing a balanced feed mixture is important. A recommended formula includes 60% corn, 37% vegetable or cottonseed cake, 2% starch, 1% salt, and optionally soybean meal if cake is unavailable. This helps reduce costs while maintaining nutritional value. Feed this mixture at 1% of the animal’s body weight, twice a day.
Fourth, adding performance-enhancing additives can significantly improve growth rates. Using growth implants is a common practice that increases meat production and improves feed efficiency. These implants can be applied once every 100 days during long-term feeding for better results.
Finally, careful feeding and management are key. During the transition to ammoniated grass, administer 30 mg of albendazole per kilogram of body weight to prevent parasites. After feeding, provide a stomach tonic. During the grazing season, allow cattle to graze for 1–2 months. In the later stages, ensure at least one month of confined feeding with high-concentration diets, which typically takes 60–90 days. When mixing feed, soak wet ingredients for one hour before combining with dry grass. Always provide clean water twice daily. Keep cowsheds dry, clean, and well-ventilated to maintain good hygiene and animal health.
