Ultrasound diagnosis value of atypical subacute thyroiditis

Release date: 2015-07-03

Recently, researchers from the Department of Ultrasound, the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanhua University, published a paper on subacute thyroiditis, also known as atypical subacute thyroiditis (ASAT). The study aimed to investigate the characteristics of ASAT ultrasound. Studies have shown that the nodule boundary is unclear, and echogenic centripetal reduction contributes to the diagnosis of atypical subacute thyroiditis. The article was published in the 34th issue of the Journal of Modern Chinese Medicine in 2014.

The ultrasonographic features of 41 pathologically confirmed ASAT nodules were retrospectively analyzed. Preliminary analysis revealed that all nodules showed solid hypoechoic and no calcification. A total of 41 pathologically confirmed solid hypoechoic and non-calcified thyroid cancer nodules were randomly selected as the control group, and the ultrasound characteristics of the two groups were compared.

The size of nodules in ASAT group and control group were 0.8-4.1 cm, mean (1.7±0.8) cm, 0.6-3.3 cm, mean (1.2±0.6) cm, and the cases were larger than the control group (P<0.05). . There was no significant difference in the ratio of aspect ratio >1, statistically significant hypoechoic and color Doppler flow signal between the case group and the control group (both P>0.05), while the ASAT group had a higher boundary blur ratio than the control group ( 80.5% vs. 29.3%, P<0.05), and the sensitivity and specificity of borderline fuzzy diagnosis of ASAT were 80.5% and 70.7%, respectively. The echogenic centripetal reduction was only seen in 9 ASAT nodules, and the sensitivity and specificity of echogenic centripetal reduction in ASAT were 22.0% and 100.0%, respectively.
