Pistacia

Coptis chinensis, commonly known as Huang Lianmu or Chinese Mahogany, is a versatile tree with multiple local names including eucalyptus, sassafras, and berberine tea. Its scientific name is *Pistacia chinensis* Bunge, a deciduous tree that can reach heights of up to 25 meters. The tree features red winter buds and emits a distinct aroma throughout its parts. With an open crown and lush foliage, it turns vibrant red or orange in the fall, making it a striking ornamental tree. The leaves are alternate and even-pinnate, typically consisting of 10–14 ovate-lanceolate leaflets measuring 5–8 cm in length and 2 cm in width. The tree is dioecious, with flowers appearing from March to April, and fruits maturing between September and October. The copper-green fruit is a true species, while the red one is considered empty grain. Native to China, *Pistacia chinensis* is widely distributed across various regions, including Hebei, Shandong, Guangdong, Guangxi, Taiwan, Sichuan, and Yunnan. It thrives in both wild and cultivated environments, with Hebei, Henan, Shanxi, and Shaanxi being the most prominent areas. Its altitude range varies from below 600 meters in Hebei to as high as 2,700 meters in Yunnan. This tree is adaptable to different soil types, tolerates drought, and shows strong resistance to sulfur dioxide and smoke. In Nanjing’s eastern suburbs, large natural stands of this tree grow in Qinglin Forest Farm, creating a beautiful autumn display. It prefers full sunlight and is not cold-sensitive. It grows well in acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline soils. The tree has moderate moisture resistance and strong disease resistance. Seeds weigh about 92 grams per kilogram, with 10,840 seeds per kg, and have a purity of 90–95% and a germination rate of 50–60%. Seedlings grow to about 60 cm tall, producing 20,000–25,000 seedlings per mu. It has a long lifespan, often exceeding 300 years. Young trees grow slowly, but after a few years, they begin flowering and fruiting within four years, reaching a breast height diameter of 15 cm, yielding 100–150 pounds annually. At 30 cm diameter, production increases to 200–300 pounds per year. Although resistant to diseases, it is prone to pests like the Pistacia seed bee and woodworms. The wood is dense, heavy, and fine-grained, with a grayish-yellow sapwood and brown heartwood. It is resistant to decay, holds nails well, and is used for construction, farm tools, and furniture. The fruit shell contains 3.28% oil, seeds 35.05%, and kernels 56.5%. Leaves contain 10.8% tannin, and the fruit has 5.4% tannin, which can be extracted for various uses. The bark and leaves are medicinal and can also be used to make pesticides. Fresh leaves yield aromatic oils, and young leaves can be used as tea or salted for culinary purposes.
